So what you are suggesting is.......the manager hired has a poor chance of success in your opinion,..........but have no idea who could do the job better? You don’t think that to be relevant?
I can think of alternatives Beddytare yes, but this is not about the alternatives. This is simply my view that Mark Hughes will not Keep the fans happy for long. I’ll support him and hope I’m wrong, but it doesn’t take much to turn our fans. If you want a list of alternatives that people think could do the job, start that thread and I’ll contribute. Wouldn’t want a Mod taking us off topic
However could you guarantee they would do a better job with players we have not to mention get the backing of players straight away? Starting a thread on who could have been a better manager is at the moment irrelevant as we have just appointed one who deserves a chance.
I’ve also said he deserves a chance. He kept us up. I can’t guarantee anyone could do a better job; Life isn’t quite that simple. I’m just putting my view across based on my previous thoughts on MH and what I saw on the 8 games. It would be wrong to not give him that chance, but I wouldn’t have been too upset if we hadn’t. Time will tell and let’s hope I’m buying you a pint next May, while you sit and watch me eat my humble pie
Meh, not what I would've done but not unhappy with Hughes. Best chance of that "stability" people seem to want so lets see how he does.
Not from my point of view....no humble pie needs to be eaten.....either way. Your opinion is just as valid as any other.
Yeah, it's all about perceptions I think, had Puel followed Pellegrino and not Koeman and had the same season, I think he would be better appreciated by a lot more Saints fans now. I always thought that Chris Nicholl suffered a bit by having to follow Lawrie Mac, he was a better manager than a lot of fans judged him.
And I suspect we're seeing that with Hughes at the moment. I know it's a little different, because we've had a eight game taster of Hughes and him keeping him up has won him goodwill, but I don't think he'd have been as welcomed as he has been, had he followed Ron. But following MP, well anyone who doesn't have a name surname starting with Red would have been welcomed through the door.
This is a crucial stage in MH's managerial career. If he fails here, people will associate him with his final days at Qpr, Stoke & ourselves, and he'll struggle to get another good job in the top flight. Not quite a Pards, but getting close. But I think we are going to see a desire from him, that's not only going to us safely in mid table, but also challenging for best of the rest. If he has learned lessons from the past five years, then we should see some well thought out transfers, and a serious crack at the cup competitions, even if we draw a lower league opposition in the first couple of rounds. We need to take it seriously next season, we've seen how the big six fight for the top four (AKA the spurs trophy), and we need to take advantage of that. I think he's a really good fit. We needed to simplify, even if we stray from the blue-print. I was starting to think the Southampton way is just making a profit, whatever the weather anyway, so that's no big loss. Seeing improvements in Tadic, Hoedt & Redmond* solves its own problem, but adding to this squad while letting a few leave could really put us in a strong position once again. So, dust of those flip flops and buckle yourself in, we're back on the bus & ready to roll......and we've been sooooo poor for soooooo long that Liverpool haven't even booked any hotel rooms in Blackpool this summer! Good times. uts *Please show us your potential consistently
No they're not or we'd support one of the glory clubs. Just writing that made me realise how **** would that be. Welcome Sparky.
No Southampton fan would ever support a glory club no matter how dour our style of play! I think we've all enjoyed our dig out a win performances this season. Not that we've had much choice.
No doubt. Though for me, it's the players that are the key here...at least for the moment, he has credibility in the dressing room, more than he has with the fans I would imagine. The fans are a trailing indicator; even with Puel, where it started early, it was really triggered by the fact that the team looked lost and lethargic in the first few games, and never seemed to fully take to his style. If the side looks like they're playing hard out of the gate, fan reaction will follow, IMO.
The players are happy when we stay up, and when results are good. They also aren’t jerks and will back managers while they are still on the team. No one asks what the benchwarmers and overlooked players think or what anyone thinks in an environment where they could truly speak their minds, the answers might be quite different. I really dislike the idea of basing a managerial decision on the opinions of this set of players, many of whom I would hope will be replaced. And also who most people criticized much more harshly than I for allegedly phoning it in for 3/4 of a season.
