The work of Aden Flint, Joe Bryan and Jamie Paterson has not gone unnoticed. Bristol City have been recognised as one of the best teams in Europe when it comes to scoring set-piece goals. The Robins were named 10th in a list of the best second tier teams from the top five leagues in Europe yesterday in an official report from the CIES Football Observatory Research Group. The list commended those sides who have scored the most goals from set-pieces, either directly or within the ten seconds immediately following the move taking place. The CIES Football Observatory is an an independent study group located in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, originally set up by FIFA itself, specialising in the statistical analysis of fooftball. QPR were actually the highest placed team in a list of the best second tier outfits, placed third behind Real Oviedo and Heidenheim. But the Robins were named as the next best English side in the list, with sides such as Duisburg, Sochaux and Nimes ahead of them - see the full list in the image below. Girona, Juventus, Schalke, Tottenham and Barcelona were named as the five best sides from the top divisions around Europe. Shows how important it is to have a couple of good set piece takers and some attack minded players to get on the end of them, because it could be goals from set pieces that wins you promotion. Would be interesting Oldsparkey if you could work out (for the good of this thread) how many points you won purely based on goals from set pieces. So in case I haven't explained myself well enough, if you won a game 2-1 but 1 of your goals were from a set piece, without that goal it would have ended 1-1, meaning you gained 2 points due to that set piece goal. Would be interesting to see how many points you got and how that impacted you winning promotion. Would you have got a top 6 finish without your set piece goals? I cant ask City to do this as some how they messed up and threw away a chance for promotion.

Sorry.... back from strimming the roadside verges....... I know we scored a few set pieces last season but we were also UNDONE by set pieces too - many many times.

What I find interesting about this piece is that earlier in the season Bristol City fans were talking about their team as if they were the Championships version of Man City, Barca and Holland circa 74 all wrapped up in one (I won't mention post Xmas as they seemed to lose their way after that)... Yet this, combined with a previous article that shows they played a load of direct balls forward (note I say direct and not long), seems to point to them being far more like us hoof ball/direct/hard to deal with type teams than they care to believe.... Funny how perceptions can be very different from reality eh?
I know it sounds odd, but the football they played to get into those positions was excellent - we had Booby Reid and Jamie Paterson up front - both 5ft 6ins - you can't just lump it when you have those up there - it really was good stuff
The reality was that similarity to those teams in a humble manner could be observed. This approach was highly dependant on one player - Bobby Reid. It is now apparent it was not a long term plan and recruitment, and its later recruitment was not to support that approach it was to move towards a more direct style. Bristol City as the season progressed played longer and more often. A fact. 2.5 years into his tenure Bristol City fans do not know how the team will play next season. The hoof could be the future ... Mr Johnson may not know himself.
If you spent more time on here - but probably more on OTIB or the Facebook group (not that you would of course!!) then you would know what many of our fans are like. They are quite often absolutely binary - we win a game and we are champions league contenders - however if we lose then we are relegation fodder and the manager needs to be sacked. There is no in between - Bristol City don't do 'ok' seasons - just fantastic or disastrous!!!
Don't think you're unique in that. Interesting bunch sports supporters. I think this ties into the threads about style. If you can see your manager has a blue print and the team is progressing you may cut the team some slack. If things are a bit more random then the extremities of views increases. In general, sports fans are not a forgiving type.
