I was out yesterday when McClaren's appointment was confirmed, so I didn't see if Sky Sports covered the story. Earlier in the day however, the 'Breaking News' banner swooshed across the screen, I waited with baited breath ... to be informed that Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc had extended his contract with the club for a year. That's where we are nowadays.

McClaren: No money to spend at QPR

Steve McClaren says he is fully aware money will be tight at QPR and that he has been brought in to coach the club’s young players.

Rangers have the prospect of a huge Financial Fair Play fine hanging over them and have been forced to reduce their playing budget.

But new manager McClaren, who has replaced the sacked Ian Holloway at Loftus Road, insists he is up for the challenge.

He told Sky Sports: “Every job is a coaching job – developing and making players better – but especially here where the budget’s not so big. Money’s tight.

“The academy has produced players. They’ve been given a chance and now they need developing and encouraging

“The owner, the board and management have done well over the last two years, got the budget down and encouraged young players to come through.

“They’ve been a breath of fresh air, the youngsters coming through, and we as a club ought to build on that.”

McClaren, whose last managerial job was at Derby County, has signed a two-year contract with the R’s.

He has also managed Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, FC Twente and Wolfsburg, having
initially made his name as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United.

Saw an interview with Les today where he hinted at getting a couple of senior players in. We do need an older head or two I reckon. Quite what the budget is though.

Sure, I'm not saying we need to go crazy or anything but as you say, we need to bring in some wiser heads to assist the younger players coming thru.
My only concern is that if we don't spend a cent and still expect improved results.

Two decent central defenders and a striker is needed I reckon. James Collins who has been released by West Ham as mentioned earlier in this thread by WillHoops is a good shout. I'd also look at Hylton as a striker from Luton who would be a bargain buy who knows where the back of the onion bag is. Other than that I think we have enough about us to improve and progress. The midfield is fairly solid. All of our strikers look ok as subs but not as starters and our full backs are getting better.
The goalie options look fine too as long as we can keep hold of Smithies. Hopefully McClaren can build a good spine of a team and grow from that. The central defence is our biggest concern as far as I'm concerned.

No further comments are allowed on the appointment of Steve McClaren on this forum until we've played a few games according to durbar. Who by the way, rarely if ever comments on the match day threads. He's all over the off-topic threads though.

Two glasses of wine since seven to be truthful. Regardless you're trying to deflect from the point that you have no interest in contributing to our board other than to wum and **** stir. You come on a QPR forum to not post very much about QPR. How strange is that? I notice that you didn't address my comments on the thread you replied to.

    Showdown!

Either you go or I do.

Start a thread with the option of 'Nines' or 'durbar' and which of us to remain on our board? You win, I go. I win, you go. Seems simple enough. Do it!

By the way 9s, is your drinking problem the reason you had to leave the Fire Brigade?

Oh, that Gary O'Neil , he's a midfielder. We have enough of them! And he's 35 years old. Too old to be a footballer <laugh>

I'm at three glasses of wine now durbar, you still ignore the substance of my post. Carry on with the drinking angle though. What's next?
