The away stand with its 1920s toilets is a fecking disgrace. Liked the original wooden seating in the upper tier was straight out of a museum. Feck knows what the europa league will make of it. All the prem money (twice)still not upgraded
Will have to disagree 100% on this. Turf Moor retains it's character even though they have two relatively new stands. I'd rather go here than the likes of Rotherham and Scunthorpe(who I am watching at the moment).
I knew I'd seen a Roker Park in the non-league directory, but my memory failed me - and Google was called upon.
@Slackbladder @baraettmattesvensson and I were having a conversation on Sunday about when Charlton player Maidstone United at their ground. I definitely remember going to that one and I’m sure Keith Peacock was Maidstone’s Manager. Elfs couldn’t remember it. Were you there ? From memory, we drew 1-1.
I was at both games. The first match at the Valley finished 1-1 and the second,at their ground, finished 2-1 to us. https://www.11v11.com/teams/charlton-athletic/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Maidstone United/
I was at the replay of the game we drew 1-1, when Flanagan and Hales got sent off. We had trouble getting in because the turnstile operators sent us from pillar to post, and eventually we climbed through a fence even though we had tickets. We won that game 2-1, and I don't remember playing them any other time, although I'll check my Colin Cameron later. At the original game Maidstone had Dickie Guy in goal, whom older fans will remember for saving a Peter Lorimer penalty live on TV when he played for Wimbledon. I got to know him later as Richard Guy, bespoke builder and decorator, and we had a chat about the fight.
I think, if my memory serves me well, there was a bit of fisticuffs between the local youth and Charlton.
Worst crowd trouble I have ever personally experienced at a football match was when I got roped in by a Gills fan to attend an FA Cup in the mid 80s. Kettering v Gills. Had a group of Kettering fans waiting by our car at full time, one climbed on the bonnet and one the roof. @brb may remember that game.
