I never understood why young gets stick. He is great utility player and has a better freekick than the usual suspects
Welbeck has a very decent record for England. 15 in 36 I think which ain't bad for someone who mainly plays wide.
Should have picked Crouch... talking about records... Let's face it. Last 5 mins, we need a goal... anybody here picking Welbeck over Crouch? Didn't think so.
Bench warming is a crucial part of the tournament... Sterling/Vardy one wing/forward role, Rashford/Lingard/Young the other. Welbeck really is a pointless pick... and he's injury prone. Still, they have Lallana and Livermore on the reserve list, are actually taking Cahill and Phil Jones, so Southgate is clearly mental...
I think.its the initial 85 minutes England are finally thinking about I actually think Southall is picking a squad that suits English players. I remember listening to gerrard Rio lamps about how they play a certain way and qualify but meet the top teams and are left chasing shadows. Likes of welbeck were used by SAF to provide more than just go forward, basically work rate and did it well
Yeah let's just slate the manager before he's even given the chance to fail. People want the old guard phased out, it's one of most inexperienced squads ever. The bloke can't win. Our problems run so much deeper than simply the manager and players though and we'll continue to achieve **** all until we address that.
See I think the team is full of hard working midfielders, but severely lack talent. Henderson is the only player out of the potential midfielders picked who can spray a pass or look to get a player in behind, one of 4 English players capable, but he's the worst of the 4. Milner, Shelvey and Drinkwater are all much more accomplished at chance generation, but Henderson is an all-round workhorse. I think we'll struggle to break down the smaller nations, and feed Vardy/Rashford on the counter against bigger nations. It's been like that for a while, which is why it is beyond baffling not to see Shelvey be given serious consideration, especially in light of an exemplary disciplinary record for the last 7 months. Yet Lallana and Livermore are on the reserve list? That is a sick joke. The centre of our defence has been regularly utilised for England, but largely very very poor individually all year. A bit hypocritical to discount Hart but include Stones, Jones and Cahill.
I don't know why people are so desperate for Southgate to fail, people moan that no one cares about England. You can't tell me that he doesn't care. He's also been around the international setup a long time so knows the score and poor records at club level are irrelevant. Give a bloke a ****ing chance ffs. I'm - relatively speaking - quite optimistic. I think we'll get through the group which will likely mean Colombia/Poland which is winnable. Then if we get through that we'll go out to the first team of substance we meet in the qf which would have to be considered a success imo.
I agree with your first bit mate (think shelvey is dogshit tbh) and I do believe it's a case of lessons learnt As I say Rio Stevie g and lamps went to great detail in describing the issues with england as a team and it was about being exposed in the finals. They felt the team was left chasing shadows and not the players to cope It could go wrong but I like the thinking behind it. Fans think we are on party with Brazil or Spain and we are more Burnley tbh and dyche has shown how you can compete by making signings that fit that game
Jesus don't cry about it. I don't give a **** about experience, I just think he's made a horrendous squad selection which will seal his fate. It's not like I'm sending him ricin crispy cakes. The forum will shutdown very quickly if we must bow down before Kim Jun Southgate. In fact, if you read what I've written, I think he should have picked some players without many international caps at all, and discarded some of the older ****e.
I can get on board with your thoughts, because I think the same thing re our status in world football, however I think you are missing the practical application... especially if you think Shelvey is dogshit. Burnley have hard working players, but they have a bit of talent as well to support that workrate. I think the balance has gone too far towards hard work. I think we'll see a lot of turgid sideways stuff, not utilising the potential pacey directness basically slapping Southgate in the face.
But he's mainly done that in his time so far bit by bit and although not perfect it's a huge stretch to say that his choice is 'horrendous'.
As I said earlier I have watched shelvey a lot since his Liverpool days, and I have seen analysis of his game by different pundits. Take away the motd reel and he is a chug along at his own rate player, not shy to get into a 50/50 and the odd great pass but he leaves this behind him very exposed Can't remember who did an in depth analysis of him this season and slated him, correctly imo after a nufc game Different level but I recall Stevie g also being looked at as someone who often left his position, ie lack of discipline in keeping shape, which was detrimental to England. Point not being to compare gerrard to shelvey but to show that even a great player can unbalance a team. And balance will be key for England. Always has been imo but they couldn't drop certain names
Cahill, Jones, Stones - awful form, injuries and have been dropped by their clubs. Delph - Plays for Man City... as a left back... behind Sane... we could probably have a got at doing that mate, it can't be hard! What is the point of him being the squad. He's probably 8th or 9th best CM, and we have 3 or more players in the squad who could play left back or left wing. Seems a ludicrous choice. I've mentioned the lack of midfield creativity lots already. That will sadly be the biggest issue for us as we struggle through a group phase we should have few issues with. Welbeck... CROUCH MAN CROUCH
Meh, I watch him week in week out. He absolutely bosses games. Picking up from the goalkeeper, pulling the strings. He's got the second highest chance creation of all the English midfielders, and he plays in a **** team, let's be honest. He can't shoot for ****, but there is nobody currently playing the game, with English nationality, who would be better at playing passes over the top for pacey forwards, or drilling them into Kane. He currently works with Joselu and Gayle ffs. He has off games, like any player, where it all breaks down, and he needs hardworkers alongside him, but he will end up playing in a much better team, and it will be emphasised how good he is. Maybe even after this transfer window. Perhaps you're right, but a Shelvey option off the bench at least, is vastly different to having another workhorse. They ask different questions. A trick has been missed.
I agree on Delph and would personally have taken Wilshere as he would offer the creativity you mention. Otherwise we're relying on Alli and trying to get in behind with Vardy/Sterling. Unfortunately you can't do a lot about defence as we're not exactly spoilt for choice. Cahill is there for his experience and is the only player with over 40 caps I believe. I'd prefer him as captain to Henderson tbh. Thing is with England at the moment is we've got a few good attacking players and full backs but the central midfield and defence is largely ****e.
