With Dier and Henderson in there he is. He's played in a midfield 3 loads of times for Liverpool mate.
That's subjective. I think Henderson is better, by some distance. Dier is an accident waiting to happen. I'm far from convinced.
I just think he's overrated. Not necessarily a bad player but nowhere near as good as what Arsenal/ the media make him out to be. I rate Shelvey higher than Wilshere.
Southgate won't play 2. He'll play 2 DM's (Hendo and Dier) and play another slightly in front. Because he's a pussy.
Each to their own I suppose. Since Dier joined he's probably played the most games out of any outfield player in our squad and I think that's a telling sign of how instrumental he's been for us. His versatility also allows us (and England if need be) to change formations mid-match which is massive, very few players can do that. It was hardly surprising Utd were being linked with a £40m bid for him last summer before they got Matic.
Barkley ended up going for £15m I think, mate, as his contract would've been up in 6 months. May be wrong but weren't Chelsea in need of signing homegrown talent to fill their quota? I think that's why Leicester bent them over the table with the Drinkwater fee, good on them as well.
There's a few trophies in that squad actually, but no doubt Southgate will build his first 11 around those who fail to deliver consistently.
Oh yeah Barkley was gonna go for 40mil but walked out the medical at Chelsea to proper **** over Everton and get a better wage packet at Chelsea by waiting a year What a ****!
I honestly have mate. And yeah there's been the odd game where he has sprayed the ball on a six pence and not shied from a 50/50, that has become the focus if Newcastle won. But that's like 5 minutes of the match highlighted in motd They did a few in depth analysis of his game and overall he offers no defensive cover, sleep walks through games. I honestly don't see the fuss, he's a championship player at best imho
As opposed to having two midfielders? I don’t like this idea of picking a load of bit part players who offer little in secondary positions, particularly as they are unlikely to play. Personally I’d have broke my neck to get Milner out of retirement given he has been absolutely outstanding and breaking CL records. Although as a newcastle fan I’d prefer Shelvey was fresh for next season I’d have taken him too. I think Rose is very fortunate and Bertrand must be miffed. I prob would have been a bit bolder and taken Sessegnon and Arnold as back up to Walker and Bertrand. If not I’d have taken Delph instead of Sessegnon. I’d have ditched all these bit parts like Young, I’d have dropped Trippier (as good as he’s been), and used the two spaces to take a couple of players who could change games and assist. We need to get the best out of our pace and the likes of Alli, Rashford, Vardy, Sterling are all good because they have creators pulling the strings like Silva, Mahrez, Eriksen etc. Shelvey is not a world beater by any stretch but he has a passing range beyond any of those selected. Don’t mind the strikers, don’t mind the keepers. Cahill should not be anywhere near. I’d have gone Tarkowski. Lascelles has been mentioned and he has been great for us but he hasn’t been involved in any squad. Stones ok I understand despite being dodgy and Maguire is a good pick. Jones I’ve always liked but he is suspect on form this season. He’s just gone very safe for me and the 6 full backs is just stone cold crazy. I can see ya getting there, going sideways a lot, and Henderson and Dier getting the blame for Southgates incompetence. Dier I think is the key as you can play him in holding midfield but more of a libero to step into a back three and release the full backs. Alli and Sterling need the freedom they have at their clubs. Also would have given Sancho of Dortmund serious consideration. Young but he has looked very very good in the Bundesliga which is a strong league.
Certainly has but you only need two full backs for each position whatever formation you are playing. We’ve taken three for some reason under the illusion that they offer something elsewhere. They don’t or at least no different to what is already in the midfield picks. It would come down to two from Bertrand, Rose, Young, Delph and Sessegnon. I’d have gone Sessegnon just because I suspect we will play 3 at the back and he is the best attacking option and gives you natural balance. At least he plays two roles and offers something different to the rest of the squad however you select him. If he’d just picked two from the five though then ok. But 3? Just weird for me.
