That's awesome news though. Cue me being overly optimistic again with regards to this window but this is exactly what I expected from the club. Get as many first team players tied down to new and better deals so that when <insert top signing here> joins, there won't be any concerns that a new guy is earning considerably more than an existing player.
All the papers are quoting that United are after Toby for £40m. Even with one year left on his contract, that's surely daylight robbery when you consider we paid £42m for Sanchez!

So do these people want to use that 2m to give Toby an extra 20K/week for the next two seasons, 10K/week for the next 4 etc ??
It's as if some people have a poor understanding of economics - or think half our first team won't promptly demand wage parity.
I'll give you a "crazy idea" . Assume Toby wants 180K/week. Manager and Levy ask the following for a meeting : Lloris, Jan, Kane, Son, Alli, Eriksen. And say : This is what he wants. We think the funds will be there to do it. 1. Do you think he warrants it ?? 2. If so, giving him that means you will not be getting that, even though you may have equal/greater importance to the current/future performance of the team. Will you still be ok with this happening ??
Certain relegated players can be great buys especially if they have release clauses. We’ve made some pretty decent ones in the past, Bassong and Parker joined after their sides went down and both done really well for us, Parker is arguably the best DM we’ve had in the Prem. Even Bent, for all the stick he got, had a pretty decent strike rate for someone that wasn’t always first choice here. Evans, Shaqiri, Shawcross, Mawson, Rondon, Wimmer, Butland and Chadli are all more than good enough to play for at least a top ten side. Some of those would even make good squad options here.
