https://southamptonfc.com/news/2018...d-post-saints-vs-man-city-premier-league-1718 Mark Hughes talking about what he said to the players when he first arrived.
The Hoddle thing has more to do with him overlooking Matty during his England tenure, than anything else. I don't think anyone begrudged him going to Spurs really - although I suspect we all enjoyed watching him fail there, especially as Saints had a hand in that. I was at WHL when we gave them a 3-1 drubbing, and vividly recall him looking forlorn on the touchline as we all sang "you're getting sacked in the morning". That was fun. He was a sublime player, one of the most naturally gifted this country has ever produced. Which does make the lack of opportunities for MLT difficult to swallow.
Except that, outside of Southampton, it's not such a big deal. Matty, for all his wonderful talent, didn't fit in with the manager's plans - it happens. Hoddle also got stick for not taking Gascoigne, bringing along some kid called Owen, and being reluctant to start Beckham, who he thought was immature and potentially a liabilty. Hindsight suggestd he got all those calls right.
Hughes kept us up when we looked certain to drop. He deserves a contract and full support. The fact that he froze out boufal suggests he is a tough man manager too, probably what we need.
Hughes is a top manager and i will be glad if / when he's appointed. The bulk of the player seem to buy into his way of thinking however, the boards transfer policy will make or break him. Early business all round will help all parties, sadly the world cup will hinder that.
No excuse not to get the Promes deal done and dusted early, unless there has been a change of heart from the player and Saints.
That's optimistic. Is the season starting later than usual? I give until we lose 2-1 at the likes of Man Utd. Pellegrino got one of his may drawn games there, the posters will say.
Just got back from a pub lunch and....nothing! What have you lot been doing...Hughes should have been signed by now.
I was watching it last weekend. It was good, but Matt would have shot and scored that one for the halfway line. (Cos he was too lazy to carry on running)
