Shrewsbury win it 0-1! Second leg at Shrewsbury on Sunday. Morris was subbed for fresh legs after 75 minutes but Godfrey played the whole game.
I've actually seen him play for the under 23s on several occasions and he certainly wasn't lazy then.
That might be a language thing. Young players can sometimes lose discipline through enthusiasm, but that will build with experience. That's different to the attitude problems of a Redmond or Edwards, who want to attack but dislike defending. TC doesn't seem to suffer from that from what I've seen. Like Madders, he wants to defend when the ball is lost.
I am quietly very confidant about the imminent arrival of KM. He appears to be a type of player that is not represented amongst our current squad.
Norwich City’s young hot shot Adam Idah sealed the Republic of Ireland’s place in the last eight of the U17 European Championships on Friday with a stoppage time goal in a 2-0 win against Bosnia’s U17s in their final group clash. #pleasesignhimup
I know what you mean, GE. I'm wondering if continental football is a more gentile environment. Having said that, Tettey, Reed, Trybull, Hanley, Lewis and more lately Vrancic have had a bite in their play which bodes well for the future. Hopefully McLean, Godfrey, Thompson and Morris will bring more (Charlton are still moaning about Morris's aggression last night). The willingness to fight for every ball is a crucial attribute in the Championship and we need more of it. Hopefully DF knows that now.
Carlton Morris scored for Shrewsbury in their 1-0 win over Charlton to see them through to the League One Play-off final. He played the first 59 minutes and Godfrey played the whole match.
Let's hope that it convinces DF that they should be involved in pre-season!!!! Just read this - 'Another youngster flying the Canaries flag is Adam Idah, who is making a real name for himself in the U17 European Championship. This evening he comes face to face with an arch rival for the tournament’s goal boot. Idah’s goals have helped take the Republic of Ireland to the quarter-finals of the tournament – being held in England – and tonight at Chesterfield (7pm) they face the Dutch for a place in the final four. The Canaries hot-shot has nine goals between qualifiers and the main tournament – one goal behind Chelsea’s Dutch striker Daishawn Redan. The 17-year-old Idah – City’s Academy player of the season – scored the insurance goal as the Irish beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 2-0 on Friday to earn their date '
I've just noticed what predictive text did to quarter-final! (It just did it again!) The first two quarter-finals were last night with the final two tonight, including RoI and Idah.
Bizarre call by Referee. Game tied 1-1 after time and goes to a shootout. Idah's shot was blocked giving Netherlands the advantage. RoI keeper saves the potential winning penalty shot by the dutch but is adjudged to have come off his line too early. The dutch player was successful with the retake and Holland go through.
Minutes this season for U21's in the Championship: 1 - Hull City - 12,569 2 - Nottingham Forest - 9,702 3 - Norwich City - 9,580 4 - Ipswich Town - 9,286 5 - Wolves - 8,876 Obviously Angus contributes a great deal of those, he was the U21 player with the most minutes this season, but still promising! When you remove loanees, we're 4th in the table.
I think Hanson may have had a point about winning with kids, the top 4 at least all did beggar all! Bah!
My views on Godfrey and Morris are based purely on the two legs of the Shrewsbury v Charlton game which I watched on TV. Godfrey was way above average in both legs in his role as a defensive midfielder but can he be considered a versatile player? Is he big enough and strong enough to play CB and is he speedy enough to play RB. IMO the answer to both questions is no. Is he good enough to share the DM role with Tettey next season and make the role his after that? IMO - yes. My views on Morris were less positive. Did he look a natural goalscorer? No. He scored in the second leg but how did the GK allow a toe poke beat him at his near post? Did he display the power and commitment required to carry out the sole man up front role? IMO - No. Did he show the stamina levels required to carry out that role? The fact that he was withdrawn in both legs and with less than an hour gone in the first leg indicates that he hasn't. Will Shrewsbury want him back if they get promoted? I doubt it. Will the want him back if they don't go up? Probably. Does he look good enough to be a viable option as 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice for a Championship side trying to improve on a mid-table position? IMO - No. I think he is in danger of being another youngster that the Club and fans cling to for sentimental reasons in the hope that they will suddenly come good before they release him and let them find their natural level in the lower leagues and as such I would be happy if they let him go now.
Good to hear positive things about Godfrey. When he joined the club he had barely any senior football under his belt, it's no surprise he was trialled around the park. It looks like he's found his natural position at DM, I don't think his ability at RB or CB will be a factor in deciding the role he plays in our squad next season. He may end up being pressed into one of those roles in the event of an injury crisis, but I don't think the club will be worried about him being competition anywhere other than DM.
Thanks 1950 and I'm only basing my judgement of Morris on seeing him when playing for the Under 23s and it seems Idah may already be ahead of him in the 'pecking order' anyway. Godfrey I'm certain will be in the first team squad next season and could share the DM role with Tettey. He can also play further forward, but I feel we have enough cover in that area. He may well be another player that leaves for a pittance, but so be it.
Godfrey whether we play him or not, looks to at least graduated beyond pittance level already. Given his youth and quality already, I think most championship sides would take a punt on him and we're talking £1m+ but I think he'll do well for us and go for considerably more eventually. As 1950 said and a number of other commentators around his season with the Shrews, he has excelled and been a top performer in league 1, I think he will transition well to championship football as he has the physical tools to do well. Bah!
