He must be more hated on Wearside than Thatcher.

    Too much?

Nah not too much, I actually think there's some apathy from him in some quarters though. He's a sad individual who has got away with leeching a healthy living. A feckless sod.

Thatcher intended to do every single thing she did...

I've no problem him seeing out his contract. I have a problem with him being **** and not being able to attempt to play football at a **** Championship level.

Let him rot if he won't sign for anybody else. See how he does for England then.

Its a £2m hit for training.

Don't let him train. We're taking the hit. No one's coming in for him. Let him rot.

Then we're not fulfilling our obligations of his contract and he's released and sues us. Got to let him use the facilities sadly.

That'd be a darkly comic final twist if we were the ones found in breach of contract and got sued by Rodwell.

    Don't even bloody go there!

Apart from the fact we'd take a hit I'd be worried about the lad getting out of town alive!

Even if he stays next season his 40% pay cut comes into effect as we weren't promoted at first attempt (ironic how it went the other way).

He's effectively (only) on £40k per week next year, as opposed to £70k currently.

Silver linings and all that. £30k per week is a lot of money.

    The ****ing leach.

Just a thought but depending on the phrasing of his contract are you sure his salary will be cut? If the contract provided that his salary would be cut if you failed to get out of the Championship at the first attempt then as you have then his salary wouldn’t be cut. As I say, just a thought.

    :)

As a second thought, it would appear that by employing a player on even £40,000 per week you are trying to buy your way out of the First Division. not surprising people are saying football is being spoilt by money.

Didn't know Maggie did that. Explains a lot. I actually lived in a shipyard for awhile. Good, honest work.

The only positive is that his career is finished.
He'll never be offered anything of worth again.

I’m coming in late and apologise if it has been said before but my take on the situation is that little thought from the employers (SAFC) has been forthcoming.
    My solution:-
It is likely that he has a clause in his contract that he is OBLIGED to carry out a certain amount of PR for his club. Modelling new strips, statements to the press, Q&A sessions with selected audiences (supporters clubs, working mens clubs etc. ala Quinny a few years back). Couple this with a place on the bench at a home game (I know we lose a sub but we have 6 others). Now the feed back of sh:t and pure vitriol from the fans would go deep in to his psyche. 25/30,000 fans screaming at him as the coach INSISTED that he warmed up along the touchline would I believe result in one of two outcomes.
    1. He is deeply affected by the attitude of decent fans and does the right thing and resigns his contract. Or
    2. He refuses, thus putting himself in breach of contract, and bye bye.
Or am I being naive ?

He won't walk away from his contract, and he knows how to dodge the bullets

We are stuck with him, and he will take every last penny from SAFC, because he knows that after that, there is nothing more for him anywhere

You can’t dodge bullets if you are in Downhill WMC or similar, or if you are running up the touchline at the SOL. To keep your theme - keep him PUBLICLY in the firing line. This has NOT been tried. To ignore him and let him train when he wants with the youngsters suits HIM just fine. Letting him pick up his wages to the sound of fury from the fans who ultimately pay his wages would I believe be a massive kick up the jacksey.
