Sean Dyche labels his time at Bristol City as the worst - and best - of his career
Burnley boss learnt a lot at Ashton Gate that is helping him now.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has been speaking to the media ahead of the Clarets' final game of the season against Bournemouth.

The former centre-back has been talking to the Daily Mail in an exclusive interview and has picked out his time at Ashton Gate as being a key period now having a bearing on his managerial career.

Dyche joined City from Chesterfiled back in 1997 and helped City to promotion before a relegation the following year and spending time on loan at Luton Town.

And he recalled a time when he was sitting at the back of the stands at Ashton Gate with fellow Robins discard, Paul Tisdale.

Dyche spoke about the period having arrived in BS3 as a big money signing at the age of 26, but hindered by injuries and being booed when he did play for the side that struggled after going up initially to England's second tier.

The contender for manager of the year was asked what the next big thing in football might be and the Burnley boss revealed that it would be major changes in managing 'player welfare' - using his time at Ashton Gate as an example.

'I had a lot of tough experiences at Bristol City," he told the Daily Mail .

"I came there for a few quid and was getting booed off by fans, got injured. I was out of the team due to injury but also because I was having an awful time playing wise.

"But they were amazing experiences. You didn't know it then because it was hard but they've stood me unbelievably in good stead. It was the worst period of my career. But actually worked out to be the best period of my career for what I do now," he explained.

"My success now is winning but very closely behind that is development. I believe in players having a better chance than I had of being a professional. And some of that comes out of my thinking at Bristol City.

"Did they give me a chance to get through it? Not really. They didn't have the skillset. I have got that skillset from those experiences. Life coaching, the mental and physical well-being of footballers, is going to be really important.

"I don't mean necessarily in a deep psychological way. But they [players] are surrounded by a lot of people. Important people, seemingly. Not always. But important in their worlds. They're mini companies.

"They get a lot of information thrown at them, not always appropriate or authentic information. They have to somehow filter that. And make sense of it.

"And they get a barrage of it, often. And they have to get on that pitch and still give everything. What is any given company doing about that? We're somewhere in the process. Soft psychology, I call it."

Dyche went on to explain that he uses a psychologist at Burnley. But it appears that it is his experiences at Bristol City that have forged a lot of what is now becoming very successful up at Turf Moor.

From here, Sean Dyche ERA .. AND THE THINKING of SL etc et al CITY are becoming a different entity.............. some major companies will only take on peeps that have no previous experience in their product, they want to train in their way and not with the baggage that may accompany them from a similar previous employment .. I think Honda are of /did the same idea.

    "part of the 5 pillars"?

Getting booed by the Bristol City fans as a player?
    Sounds familiar.
God help him if he ever came to AG as a manager - and lost a couple of games.

He was useless as a player for us and was dropped.
If he'd had a different father he'd have played continually.
