In a perverse sort of way one has to congratulate dame Nellie on his achievement ..first few weeks he picked up players no one wanted! kept them in championship and then went on to get promo ... but how good will the existing team be next season? I have them down as having a new manager come January and struggling!
.....posted 2 hours ago JGF and they can't bring themselves to talk about anything Cardiff. You'll probably be ostracised now.....
Just to whet your appetite for our demise then, here's the predicted final table next year by WOL based upon current odds offered.......... Predicted Premier League 2018-19 table 1 Man City 2 Liverpool 3 Manchester United 4 Chelsea 5 Tottenham 6 Arsenal 7 Leicester 8 Everton 9 Wolves 10 Southampton 11 Bournemouth 12 Newcastle 13 West Ham 14 Crystal Palace 15 Burnley 16 Brighton 17 Watford 18 Huddersfield 19 Cardiff City (Table based on odds for sides to win the league and to stay up, with one side still to be promoted from the Championship)
Seems pretty reflective of what to expect next season, both top and bottom. The irony is whoever comes up via the play-offs will probably still be above you in the bookies eyes, it's just the way it is in the Prem. Can't see Wolves being that high though.
Didn't stop them coming on here before your promotion chances went tits up. Understandable though - it must be such a dissappointment to seen "Dame Nellie" doing so well.....
I agree Supcon. The only comfort we can take from that is at this time last season, we were predicted to finish 14th in the Championship.
I'd much rather be tipped to struggle and prove the doubters wrong than be expected to do well and only be able to meet expectations/disappoint. I think it's reasonable to say that Cardiff are more likely to be relegated than stay up, purely down to the fact that the promoted sides are always the favourites to go back down, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cardiff did find a way to survive - Warnock will likely want to prove those that say he can't cut it at the very highest level wrong.
Interesting opinion in the last sentence of your OP there JGF that I didn't take in at first glance when I read it. I suppose the cynical would say the same could be said about Johnson, so which of the two do you think will be first to have his collar felt? By all accounts Warnock seems to be on a hiding to nothing next season, but what about Johnson - can he rely on Lansdown support again if it goes wrong?
Warnock should have a good deal of goodwill with the fans and Tan seems to have learnt to leave football matters to those that know it, rather than try to assert his own will/wishes, so I think it'd take a lot for him to get the boot; though I never under-estimate the short-termism of fans... LJ is seemingly dividing fans as much as he did when he was a player! He's had two separate periods of terrible form, wasted a great opportunity of reaching the play-offs, but we've also seen some of the best football ever played by the club also, as well as ultimately achieving what is our best finish in a decade. It's an interesting question whether as a fan you'd be more comfortable with consistent mediocrity or occasional brilliance, coupled with occasional ineptitude. For my two cents, the latter is probably closer to what you'd want, but there are limits and much less than a play-off bid this season may cause the tide to turn so much that even SL couldn't protect him anymore..
If LJ is allowed to spend another £25 million and bring in a further 30 players then I reckon he has a chance. However, if he has to sell our assets before buying then he'll struggle. Time will tell.
I recon (without researching) that most clubs would spend £25m and not even get a whisper of the Playoffs. Cardiff are an example of an extreme exception to the norm - so are Millwall and Brentford. The rest spent big and only 1 so far have got what they paid for (Wolves). 3 of the other big spenders will miss out.
Very experienced unlike our gaffer, apparently the interview tonight was full of waffle with Geoff Twentyman.
The only players Colin spent 7 figures on struggled. Tomlin went out on loan and madine hardly got a kick. Think tan should stop him spending. Freebies all the way.
Warnock is brilliant at this level. He inspires mediocre players to believe and play beyond themselves. His Achilles heel is managing the big egos and personalities that form the Premiership player. His rants just fall on deaf ears. Cardiff will need to get rid of him now and rebuild. Still wish we had that conundrum mind.......
