Interesting article on the England boys stats this year. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44109210 Think Lacselles will miss out but Shelvey i think will sneak into the 35 man prelim squad and will have to take his chance...
P.S. Pickford is ****e, would take him but he'd be my 3rd choice. Think Butland and Pope are way better than the aggressive little ****tard sixfingered scum bag.
Does make a strong case for Shelvey going off the stats. Another argument is that there simply no other English players of his style and quality currently playing.
I've just watched MOTD highlights again. There is no way they can leave Shelvey behind. He absolutely destroyed Chelsea and the thing is he has been consistently doing it since the turn of the year. He's got to go.
Article in Mirror suggesting he won't go as Southgate worries about his temperament and whether he would be a "good tourist"! https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/newcastles-jonjo-shelvey-isnt-even-12536895 Great Twitter response to it: Particularly enjoyed this one:
It is double standards of the highest order. Jonjos fate was sealed when he was accused of that racist comment.
Almost certainly. Coupled with a poor run of form around the international periods. His late season form is probably too little too late.
Hart and Wilshere have been ruled out somehow, so Shelvey could be in. He'll probably fall at the final hurdle!
I think this is a good sign at least. If he'd of Picked those two I think I wouldn't have bothered watching the world cup. I'm actually a fan of Wiltshire but he would of ended up a wasted place. We need to just go for it with a proper freshen up...that includes Shelvey.
If Livermore and Loftus-Cheek go, and Shelvey doesn't, I'll be supporting another country, like Southgate obviously would be!
Exactly. Loftus cheek although a good young player is not ready to go to a world cup. Livermore is totally average. England's single biggest problem is making chances. We have got the forwards to take them but no one in the middle of the park looks to put the ball in dangerous areas. We just go sideways hoping that our wide players make things happen. It's just so slow and preditctable.
This is what is annoying me. What are the likes of Loftus Cheek and Livermore going to offer? They are basically poor versions of Henderson. Loftus Cheek has more but he hasn’t shown it. Shelvey offers something they haven’t got. He is playing. He is in form. He basically has much more to offer. Mawson, Ox, Wilshere out must give hope to Lascelles and Shelvey.
I'd probably take Henderson, Dier, Milner, Shelvey, Dele-Ali maybe another for CM. Maybe the other means you can take Rashford and Lingerd who i think should both go. I think Delph was mentioned on the other thread. Probably a handy option also as is versatile.
I like Salisbury for the cathedral and nearby pre-historic archeological sites but the county is a bit uninspiring otherwise.
The fact is that Loftus-Cheek, Livermore and to an extent Henderson, do not have the ability to run a game like Shelvey. They are workhorses really. Workhorses are required, but a midfield of nothing but workhorses leads to turgid performances.
Are people really expecting good decisions from the clown booted out of Boro? Shelvey might have had a few reds early on in the season, but for Southgate to lump him in the Barton category is stupid, he's clearly shown he can perform and stay calm. Why are we so high up in the odds to win? The team is willies.
To be fair, and I don't rate Southgate, he has a point. Shelvey has been a tit his whole career. He is petulant and has wasted his ability to this point. He has not been involved in Barton like incidents but he has been sent off 4 times in his PL career. Basically 1 red card a season on average and 7 yellows. Its not great - anyone pretending otherwise is kidding themselves. If it was because he was a nasty holding midfielder then you'd cut him some slack, but its basically for kicking out like a child. That is a liability in tournament football as we have discovered to our detriment previously. He has turned a corner to us at the midway point of this season but we are deeply involved and invested in our club. We watch him every week, we can see the difference. To the outside he's just Jonjo Shelvey in a bit of form and behaving himself. Lets remember its 5 months of form of behaviour. Against a backdrop of an entire career to the age of 26 being an arsehole. I'd take him without question but I don't think its fair to pretend there isn't an issue.
Lascelles has to go IMO, he has been a rock all season. Not to mention he's young and could anchor the team for a decade.
Gareth Southgate isn't too bothered about taking the best passer available to him, he likes the England team to play from the back and is sure enough in his ideas there'll be no need whatsoever for a plan B.
Shelvey should do some coke, get pissed and nick a Taxi. Seems to guarantee an England place these days.
