there are so many issues to do with people lacking respect for people's religions, cultures, languages, heritage, ideas and foods that need talking about to bring about more unity...and some ****stain complains about a young woman wearing an item of clothing. What the **** is it to him what she wears? Do no Asian women should be allowed to wear "western clothing" and no Europeans should be allowed to wear denim? What a complete cock. The more people of different cultures and background what each others cultures, music, food, clothing etc...the more understanding and less ignorance there is imo.
To be fair I think his thoughts on the young lady were far less offensive than those of 90%of any other men who saw it. I'd end up doing a10 stretch in the Scrubbs for mine...
There's a big difference between cultural exchange and cultural appropriation. The former is usually always positive, the latter can cause offence. In this particular case a young white woman wearing a traditional Chinese dress seems harmless, certainly to us in the UK. In the US though there will be thousands of American/Chinese who have in their family history the memory of 'the yellow peril' when Chinese immigrants were seen as a threat and were often lynched. In the 1920's laws were passed to deny them citizenship. So for some it's about a systemic power dynamic and seeing a member of the dominant group [white] taking part of the culture of a group that was systematically oppressed [Chinese] is offensive.
But what has a white person wearing a Chinese fashion item got to do with the white group systematically oppressing the Chinese? Likewise if a white person wearing their heads in dreadlocks? Does that mean white people cant do it but Chinese people can?
I'm new to all of this. Should I be offended if I take my niece to an Irish dancing Feiss and there's kids with no Irish roots taking part?
I'm fully behind the campaign against her being seen with that dress on, but my reasons are **** all to do with cultural appropriation.
