Chris Coleman’s Sunderland were leading 1-0 with four minutes to go against Burton Albion when their former striker Darren Bent silenced those booing him with a close-range finish before Liam Boyce headed the winner for the visitors in the 93rd minute.

And in another calamitous twist, Sunderland’s players did not even realise they were down until they were back in the dressing room.

That’s because Burton’s fixture against fourth-bottom Bolton next weekend means one of those teams will have at least 41 points — one more than the maximum of 40 the Black Cats can get. ‘Yes [they didn’t know], word spread when they got back in the dressing room,’ said Coleman.

‘Everyone got a bit confused. It was after I left the dressing room, towards the end of what I said. But we didn’t have what was needed. It’s a brutal experience but, over 44 games, we haven’t been good enough.’

Sunderland are only the fifth team in history to suffer consecutive relegations from the top-tier to the third.

I dont mean to keep harping on about Coleman but how could they not know we would be down? Why did the players not get it drilled into their heads before the game what scenarios were at stake and have it used as extra motivation not to get relegated in theyre own back yard against a team like Burton...? It beggers belief!

If the fans can work it out then why can't the players

It typifies to me how little any of them care or have any respect for the club and fans. Words fail me in why Coleman and his coaching staff didnt drill it into them everyday last week in training what the implications would be.

I didn’t know till I got hone and I consider myself probably more intelligent than most footballers. To be fair the radio presenters didn’t at first. It took them a while

I also rather didn’t know that it was possible with simply losing. I thought other results had to go another way too

Everyone associated with the club should have known before kickoff what was at stake. Its pretty embarassing and un proffesional really in my opinion.
Like i said it should have been used on the training pitch as an extra motivation tool to not go down like that in our own back yard.

To be fair every media outlet got their maths wrong prior to the games kicking off that weekend, nobody announced we could be relegated. Benno and Barnes were going off the media's maths until part way into the 2nd half.

I mean did we know? I didn't, Marcus didn't, don't we care? We're accusing the players of not caring but I didn't know until Barnes did the maths himself halfway through the second half. Don't Benno or Barnes care? They didn't know. Think it was a cock up from the media which nobody questioned and the players shouldn't be blamed for not caring for not knowing any more than I should.

TBH I thought it would have been painfully fekin obvious that, as bottom club, losing to the club above them, they likely to be relegated. Telling us that the players were not aware until they were in the dressing room feels to me like an insult. Coleman should have been ramming that message at them for days beforehand, win or bust! Letting a has-been score for Burton, then losing the game in the 93-min, was utterly disgraceful
Now we are hearing, according to a guardian the Club has bought 80-players over the Short years but only 6 made a profit..........WTF has been going on? the Club has been fekin robbed and the it's name trashed.....I'm gutted, but KTF that things will change for the better. Being rid of Clattermol, O'****e and Rod(him)well will, IMO be a good start.:emoticon-0121-angry...............

o Shea did not blame the goal keepers and defence in his interview either, they just brush that disaster under the carpet eh ? its funny him and Cattermole are still here after the 'knocking on the owners door' scandal. We will be drawing 0-0 at Fulham with 1 minute to go the ball will deflect of the refs arse, off Mcgeady's arm and score and the goal will stand and then we will beat wolves and gan down by 1 point I bet.

Don't think the maths of when we were or weren't relegated is really the biggest issue here...
