Its a hugely political thing to be taking the team there and we shouldn't be going IMO.. There is certainly no benefit to the team in going and they should be on holiday, getting other clubs or continuing their rehabs... Small squad played too many games and look knackered. Last thing they need is a long haul tour and more games at the end of the season.
Interesting book I read whilst I was there which was before she was in power https://www.amazon.com/dp/3940132446/?tag=not606-20 Basically was questioning the western narrative that she was all saint and the military power all bad when you have a country partly (but only partly) ****ed by colonial borders and the fact there are 135 ethnic groups in the country and parts of the country are already independently controlled. The truth was already greyer before she came to power and has proved to be so. And far too simplistic to say this is an Islam vs Buddhism (or for that matter to say Buddhism is peaceful - next major rise of terrorist groups is likely to come from Buddhists)
That was my take based on the little I have read on it and followed on the news. Did the book have pictures in it or is it not aimed at Chesh?
This is an interview from the author (needs to be read on chrome for translation unless you can read German) from last autumn which again goes for greyer then just ethnic cleansing http://www.sueddeutsche.de/politik/myanmar-nicht-mit-moralischen-keulen-arbeiten-1.3676683
DBC is obviously the guy on here with most knowledge on the subject, we only know what we get told by the BBC I'm afraid which is not always kosher as they say. We argue and fight on this board over football so when politics is added its a waste of time, so we should all thank DBC and follow Shaks out of political debate on a footy board.
Just been reading through this thread and find it hard to believe how anyone can slate the politics of Burma having just read a few articles on the internet when in our own democratic country a democratic vote can't and won't be accepted by the losing party meaning every step to implement the process is hindered at every turn, costing millions, millions that could be spent on the NHS.
A few million on getting everyone on board is a drop in the ocean compared to the £350 mill that leaving is going to deliver to the NHS..... Oh wait a minute...
Thanks but honestly I have at best a tiny amount of knowledge on the area, just enough to be aware of how little I really do know on this area. My only point is we have to make compromises on ethics / morality a lot and it's really not as clear cut as ohh Leeds are visiting an evil war zone. It fits in with Radz policy in other areas which people will love or hate - it's the equivalent of taking a punt/investing in the U23's (and yes even I realise how ****ing crass that comparison seems when dealing with football/morality/conflict). Myanmar was isolated for 40 years but has vast potential as rich in natural resources. Even in 2015 when I went pre elections you could see how many companies were making the move into the country. We can potentially tap into investors and also a big market of football supporters who have spent decades isolated and pleased/desperate to be reconnecting the outside world. And like anywhere the majority of the people are lovely and just want to get on with their lives it's just as in the words of Jarvis Cocker:
Thats the thing we haven't left yet, so we'll never know if that £350m figure was right or way of the mark, but say for arguments sake it turrns out to be £150m its better than we have now.
Sure the Author will be getting a letter from you then telling him he got it all wrong and it was Rads fault.
The pledge has already been withdrawn. The people voted for a lie. With only a 2% majority of course it matter. Not a problem cos when we have the 2nd referendum we will be staying in, or when we stay in the customs union we will have managed to keep whay we had but have lost any say on things nd be paying more for it. You should be proud of fecking up so well.
Have you learnt nothing from our experiences with the paddies and cheshiratti? more cnuts from miles away are the last thing we need. We should be trying to win back the local kids by having a team in the prem.
The official campain never made the pledge in the first place.the only lie's were and still are from remain.Suck it up you lost.
I will refuse to vote if a second referendum comes about and would encourage everyone else to do so, after all its the unelected that call the shots in Europe anyhow, whether its the EU bignobs or the House of Lords which you are obviously happy about, why waste time having elections to boost some politicians ego? Besides any government in recent times are lucky to have had 30% of the publics vote, scrap it total waste of time.
