May God bless you my son and may the Lords countenance be forever upon you Dennis, you silly old ****.
And yet Arthur Guinness was an Anglican and staunch Unionist, whose company had a long-time policy of not hiring Catholics or those married to them. Isn't that ironic? I think Americans have done more to push the idea of Paddy's Day as a piss-up day than anyone else. I'd prefer for our patron saint's day to be important to us for said saint's piety and devotion to Christ, and for that day to be about celebrating England's wonderful history and culture. Also, Anglicanism is unlike other reformed denominations in that Saints still play a big part in faith. Edward the Confessor was long-time patron saint, whilst St Cuthbert is patron saint of Northern England. They're both a big part of our history. As for St George being 'generic', I understand why you say that but his value and honour as a martyr, and 'warrior saint' character, make him a brilliant one to have in my humble opinion. George has been a widely-known and respected saint since the Anglo-Saxon period.
Not PC to celebrate. Presumably the same people who think that also think that Easter and Christmas were ‘banned’ for not being PC. Crock of ****. St George wasn’t even English, why would it offend anybody?
Why does St George's Day have to degenerate into a pissing contest with other countries Saints days? It should be England's day, a day to celebrate our Englishness and if we can't do this without having to compare or defend the history or religion of it we should just switch it to Trafalgar Day or something and simply celebrate what a great, green and pleasant country England actually is?
St Patrick wasn't Irish, Saint Andrew wasn't Scottish. But they don't bang on about that the way a lot do about St George not being English.
Best news of all this fine Saint Georgies day is the birth of a new born royal Prince. I can only hope with the rest of the nation that the Royal couple do the right and proper thing and call the Little chap Prince George. I sure they will as I'm sure they are aware that today of all days is the birthday of the founder of England. The man who invented the language and freed the land of snakes and Scots. A fitting tribute to a future royal King.
Some of us are from the civilised world of Beverley, the East Riding's county town. O how I pity the lowly Hullensian
That doesn't matter. They're used to shared names, ya Royal types. Like, his name is George but we call him Bertie, that type of thing. They all look the same and sound the same; they're basically interchangeable. I don't think names matter too much.
What an honour it is for us all to witness the insightful and educated ramblings of our very own Royal Correspondent. Moira Stewart eat your heart out baby!
Good. St Patrick's day is a commercialised ****fest led by Americans and a beer company, which doesn't make the best beer in Ireland, but has the best marketers who appeal to the hard of thinking. I'm surprised you'd want something similar for St George's Day to be honest.
