As you're in the US, you could probably sue them.

    plumbing.

the job only idiots think is simple

theres pipe fitting/cylinder/central heating stuff. serious work. there's fix the toilet, easy, theres clean a rad etc.. simple. fit a bathroom. little more in it but could be done on own if pipes fitted back to central system properly

if you've never hired a plumber you've been lucky with your system.

Amen to that. I had three different ones out to look at a boiler issue and none of them could fix it. One of them sneakily unscrewed the wingnut holding the cistern to the bog, so when I went into the bathroom five minutes after he'd left, there was a stream of water pouring out. I suspect he only meant to create a drip, so I'd call them back for an emergency. Or he was just being a ****.

Now I make sure I look after the guy who could fix it. Like good mechanics, they're worth their weight in gold.

I've not encountered anything difficult with plumbing yet, but I find it a much more obnoxious job than doing electrical work. I'd much rather put in a new light switch or install a new ceiling fan than replace the toilet or install a new kitchen faucet.

I hate doing the plumbing... One of the most obnoxious home maintenance tasks there is.

<laugh> Actually, the last time had to replace the taps in a sink the Mrs. did it. She knows I grumble about plumbing so she did it herself. I have a wonderful wife. <laugh>

She did a good job too.

True. I'd rather bed my wife than the plumber though.

Yeah... but... that not real plumbing is it? you might break a pipe etc but you are not doing the heating system to code.

same for lights btw. how do you get insurance if you have no certification on the electricity.... my dad wired all of our place. its all well and good til something overloads. Theres a difference between sticking up a new light fixture (i've two to put up btw) and sticking in a whole new light swtich and wiring back to the panel

Water is not involved in our heating system. Our AC unit has a built in heat pump. The only heating system involved is for hot water from the hot water tap. Fortunately never had a problem with that, I flush the tank every summer to maintain it, but haven't had to replace it. I'd look to see what's involved before attempting it myself.

That's not an issue over here. You only need to be certified if selling a service. DIY there is no requirement for certification. Legally, or for insurance.

I forgot you wouldn't have need for heat bar maybe electric on the couple of days a yeat. so you've a.c. for the lot so thats a closed system.

you've basically electric shower? electric or gas boiler? then plumbing is mains to whatever piping and prob a wood frame house?

over here the heating with radiators, gas boilers, etc etc etc makes it a bit of a job then add in brick work etc making it harder to chase in pipes etc.

Yeah the heating is a tad bit more complex in England. I remember the ancient house I grew up in (built in the 1800's) we had a coal powered fire that heated the water for the radiators. <laugh>... That was probably high tech once upon a time.

Radiators around here are non existent. I think they have them up north but haven't seen a radiator here. We do have heating, it actually does get colder here than England... It just doesn't last very long when it does.. Our AC unit has a built in heat pump. Probably not as economic as radiators and such, but we don't use heat as often.

Lind Ronstadt has not aged well, but in her defence she would probably say the same about me
