Chelsea's Marcos Alonso will miss the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton at Wembley on Sunday after being given a three-match ban for violent conduct.

The 27-year-old Spanish defender was charged by the Football Association (FA) after a challenge on Shane Long in Saturday's 3-2 win against the Saints.

He will also miss Premier League matches at Burnley on Thursday and Swansea on 28 April.

Alonso denied the charge and said such a suspension would be excessive.

But this was rejected after an independent commission hearing on Wednesday.

The FA took retrospective action after officials, including referee Mike Dean, failed to see the incident where Alonso appeared to stand on the back of Long's calf in the 43rd minute of the league match at St Mary's Stadium.

"It was a poor challenge - it should have been a red card in my view," said Southampton manager Mark Hughes after his relegation-threatened side's defeat.

"The disappointment was the officials didn't see it. They were all within a 10 to 15-metre radius - one of them should have seen it."

On Wednesday, Alonso was named in the Professional Footballers' Association's Premier League team of the year - the only representative from Chelsea.

I read an interview with him today actually, he had a somewhat different angle, and it was an interesting piece tbh.

The crux of it was he was saying that if you’d not made the first team by 21/22 at a PL club then you weren’t going to, so the entire U23 thing is a load of bollocks in terms of producing homegrown first team PL players. Hard to argue that point imo.

 

I agree to an extent, but then you get some like Jesse Lingard who has broken onto the scene like he is a teenager, but no he is 25

 

All teams have players being called up to the first team and others out on loan. If the ones that are left for the U23s (#legit young players plus those out of form or coming back from injury) are so crap you get relegated then just fire Butt and not bother with a U23 team in the first place.

IMO a key thing is consistency of style. Mourinho's tactics are 10 men behind the ball and rely on the most expensive football players in the world to take the one chance that falls to them. That BS doesn't work well with youth teams. If you develop proper systems of play then its better practice for the players and likely to be more successful.
