Besides the cash being deposited, the other reason I don't think that Ashley would sell up and walk away is the fact that he has Rafa where he wants him.

With profits rolling in as they are, he also has a manager who is loved and idolised in a way that couldn't be replicated anywhere else. Ashley knows that means something to Rafa and it might just persuade him to stay put and compete with the dregs of this league on a shoestring.

So it's a win win for porker. Why would he walk away now?

    What’s not to like?

    Newcastle born and bred
    Newcastle fan
Rags to riches working his way up
    Brings in Rafa
Persuades Rafa to stay after relegation
Delivers a high percentage of the players Rafa wants in each window
Club does well under his stewardship

I think all the naysayers owe Charnley an apology. You can’t love Rafa without thanking Charnley. He is the reason he is here. Him and Big Michael. Just another example of our fans hypocrisy. The bloke they all worship was brought in by the two guys who allegedly can’t do anything right.

You are living in the past mate, that was 7 year ago. If you need the nurse because you’ve soiled again, I told you pull the red cord. I’ll be back with some grapes later this morning mate.

Some minor points that separate Pouchisms from reality:

    - Quote from the Chron: "Lee Charnley has gone from the bloke who used to fill in the team sheets at Newcastle United’s reserve team games to one of the main men at St James’ Park. At 36, the Lancashire-born Toon director will now be the club’s main figurehead when it comes to signing new faces at United."

Rags to riches is one way of putting it. Fat Mike's Penny Pinching is the official strategy.

Credit where it's due, he did seem to play a pivotal role in Rafa joining/staying, no argument there.

Your high percentage of players line is just laughable. Under his stewardship we ran the Graham Carr model, seeing the likes of SDJ and Cabella join, before eventually ending his first season under the "leadership" of John "SImply the Best" Carver. The following season he appointed Schteve McLaren, in a season that had us relegated in miserable fashion.

The transfer windows have been largely hit and miss. So I don't know what qualifies as "club does well", but in my personal opinion, relegation, Carver and McLaren aren't it.

    36..... THIRTY SIX???
I couldn't believe that and have just googled it (other search engines are available) and he is now 39 but still, he's 1yr older than me. He must have had a tough paper round!

I have to say I think it's really noble you still humour him. I gave up ages ago.
****ing hell, team sheets? That's some handy experience for the current role.
I've just had a bash and can confirm I am capable of filling one out.
Reckon I should go for MD?

Ok Newcastle bred not born. He has spent his entire working life with the club. He was here under the previous regime. That internal progression is a true rags to riches story. From successful reserve team sheet filler in to successful MD of the club. Come on that is pretty impressive at 39. Yes he made mistakes with McClaren but he learnt from them and was the key thing in Rafa Benitez returning. No Charnley, no Benitez. Imagine where we'd be now if another McClaren had taken over?

High percentage under Rafa and McClaren. Both managers have been very lucky to have been provided with good funds to spend and brought many to the club. Everyone creams over Rafa transforming the squad in the championship. Who delivered all those players he wanted? Super Lee Charnley did. When Rafa was floundering prior to Xmas, who came to his rescue in January? Super Lee Charnley did.

He has made mistakes but haven't we all. Rafa Benitez has been a complete failure at times in his working life too. It wouldn't turn anybody off appointing him. The main thing is you learn and grow as an individual. It is heartening to see that happen to someone like Charnley who has devoted his whole working life to Newcastle United. He is Newcastle United through and through. They are turning into quite the dynamic duo Rafa and Lee. You'd do well to get on board to be honest.

Shall I contact HMRC for a reference then if I want to headhunt Charnley for an executive position in my Firm?

Charnley is the very epitome of Ashley's ownership. Lowest paid exec in the top flight, Ashley's yellow-bellied yes man, over-promoted way beyond his experience and the cheapest, easiest possible option. True, it's not Charnley's fault he's crap, it's Ashley for putting him there. It's a fact that many Championship execs are paid more. He flaps and flounders through transfer window after transfer window with no clout. Bloke took two months to buy Lejeune 'cos he tried to haggle on the get out clause. Ended up paying the get out clause. We've got as many examples of his fannying about losing players than him winning any, yet we've still got an insanely disproportionate ratio of transfer fees to agent fees! TBF the Championship is probably Lee's level.

It wasn't just the abysmal judgement in standing by Carver, or the fact he then oversaw a terrible Summer of recruitment with Carr. Faffing around trying to negotiate the non-negotiable has seen our transfer strategy stagnate so we end up with last choice players then wonder why we're not doing very well. And it wasn't just that he made a dreadful choice in McLaren - something you stand on a soap box about - it was that he then stood by that **** up for far too long! Nobody will ever know what happened with Rafa - he may have applied for the job, something even Lee couldn't mess up. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say his heart's in the right place. But let's not be silly.

He's no more Newcastle through and through than the other 50,000 who turn up. Doesn't mean any of them should be in charge either. I know a coach who's Newcastle through and through, John something. Says he's the best, should we have him in charge?

When new owners arrive, it'll be no coincidence that Lee's getting into the same taxi as Mike.

Jesus if the stuff that gets spouted on here about 120m and the like is anything to go by, I’m glad none of those 50,000 get a go.

Ultimately it’s tge guys at the top responsible for everything. When things are bad, it’s their fault. When things go well, it’s also down to them.

    Altogether now...

    There’s only one Lee Charnley...
