    in football’s coffin.

A Winter break? Stick it up the rump alongside your VAR.

The FA, Premier League and EFL are close to agreement over the introduction of a winter break, Sky Sports News understands.

The FA council were being briefed on Wednesday on the progress of talks which were prompted by FA chief executive Martin Glenn almost two years ago.

Sky Sports News understands the majority of planned changes are agreed in principle - with the first break pencilled in for January and February in 2020.

If agreed, one round of Premier League matches would be played over two weeks, giving clubs a break from league action.

In return, the FA Cup fifth round will be played in midweek, with extra-time and penalties replacing replays.

It is also understood that some members of the FA council are unhappy they have not played a bigger part in negotiations, with talks having been carried out at board level.

Teams on a break from league action would be allowed to travel abroad for training camps.

However, money-making tours in the US or Far East would not be received so well.

I'm not so against this. It does at least provide a benefit in terms of reducing injuries and helping players to be fresher in the summer when an international tournament comes around.

Do you not think they’ll be away in tours?

It’s just more disrespect to the traditions of the game. FA Cup - Midweek?

How many of the other nations have players from the Premier league? A lot of the Belgian team, few Spanish, French etc... Do they moan about the English players being unfit? No...

Not having a winter break is an excuse for failings at a higher level for years. It's an easy thing to blame as no ones job is I'm danger.

I think this is long overdue.

Being a professional footballer is a hard, unpopular and poorly paid profession. Who amongst us would want to be cursed with the ability to be one.

With only a few months off each summer it's high time they also got a fortnight of in January too.

I know this is radical, and will be unpopular......I don’t like Boxing Day games, so I never go to them

That's the reason it's a must for me, full day with the family the day before Is enough. My brother pretends he's going to the Boxing Day game even if he isn't , just to get out <laugh>
