Hello, crew. Firstly I’ve got to admit that I’ve no strong opinions on the old GN, this term, but if someone held a gun to my head, although I’m sure that no-one would ever want to do that, and asked me to name the most likely winner I’d respond Anibale Fly. His run last time, when staying on into 3rd in the CGC, was a career best and this is obviously a rapidly improving 8YO. And eye-catchingly if the handicapper framed the weights now he’d be perched on 168 rather than tomorrow’s mark of 159. I also think Seeyouatmidnight looks a lot better than his impost and his close 3rd in the ’16 ‘Scottish National’, off tomorrows mark, proves the trip should hold no fears. He also had the class to rout Bristol de Mai a few months after that 3rd place finish. Gas Line Boy looks to have solid place credentials having been 5th in this race last year and he also won over the fences back in December. The Blueprint gelding seems to be better than ever, this term, and on all known evidence should win more prizemoney tomorrow. Meanwhile, one that I can’t stop looking at is Valseur Lido. I ask myself why, and I do mean why, as there are huge concerns re his stamina, weight, he looks well down his owner’s roster of entries and his recent form is worse than West Bromwich Albion’s! But in the past this triple Grade 1 winner was good with a capital ‘G’ and if these fences manage to rejuvenate him then who bally well knows, say I. I think he’s worth chancing at a huge price. Curiously, it’s also Valseur Lido’s first ever run in a handicap. Good luck all.
In 2016 when the Grand National was run in soft ground only 2 horses carrying 11 stone plus finished in the 16 finishers. Only one of those filled the pay out places and that was Gilgamboa. Many clouds finished last. So based on that stat you might want to think twice before backing any horse carrying 11 stone plus...
I see the money is continuing to come for captain redbeard.... I should add in the 2001 Red Marauder race only 4 horses finished but it was heavy. I wonder how many finish tomorrow - 12 maybe? I see the animal rights do gooder brigade are up in arms calling for the race to be cancelled.
There was a monsoon type deluge just before the race that day, won't be getting that tomorrow, but it will be testing, although I've backed Redbeard at big prices I don't know why he's so short, I'm sure he'll lengthen to morrow, just to be placed would be massive......
Come on Chase The Spud! Won the midlands national last year, it goes well at and handles this distance, it's a classy horse, perfect age, has an excellent trainer and jockey onboard, fresh and primed, on it's optimum weight (won 2/2 at this weight) and will love the ground. Obviously it's the national and anything can happen but as i said if it can stay out of trouble i'd be really surprised if CTS didn't win Do like Skelton's one at 80/1 too Virglio, keeps eyeballing me
Broken the golden rule of betting and changed my National picks (when will I ever learn - Jester Jet today a very recent example). Tiger Roll win only, Pleasant Company ew and Shantou Flyer ew. Also Coole Cody landed me a lovely touch at Cheltenham in December and although he has plenty to find on ratings he will love conditions and I can't ignore the 40/1 on offer. Good luck everyone.
Every year! In fairness they're always there. Likely these occasions are just their busy season as its probably easier to drum up publicity. The fact they're so relatively quiet for the rest of the year means they're nothing to worry about. That said, 40 runner 4 mile slogs over treacherous fences is exactly where they've got a point but they're dreaming if they think they'll ever get it cancelled. Especially in Brexit Britain. Anyway. Don't mind me. I'm quite looking forward to it and in spite of my massive distrust and general loathing of the man in the saddle, my head says Anibale Fly. So ill probably be betting the Pipe horse instead.
It’s my birthday today so if I can’t pick the winner of the National today I never will!! My 4 are; Ucello Conti Alpha Des Obeaux Houblon Des Obeaux Maggio Good luck to all and here’s to all the horses coming back safe! Have a good day everyone
