Truth in this. Russia has been trying to push back out it's borders, inevitably the reasoning behind the Ukraine. It wants to give Europe limited scope across it's front-line, the further back it is the more vulnerable it becomes. Hence why i agree with what you say about Syria, it's location forms a strategic part of it's defence for Russia along with the material interests of the region. Putin has surprised me, i thought he was in for the longer game, it might not seem relevant but it was part reason why i felt the Salisbury attempted poisoning was foolish, it brought negative attention on them from Europe who would openly seize on such an opportunity. Initially i thought it was a good idea to let Russia get involved in Syria much the same as letting the Chinese deal with North Korea. If the Americans or should i say Trump start then it's all going to kick off and we will get dragged in to it anyway. However, I think everyone needs to calm down, I'm not saying don't help Syria, I'm saying everyone clam down, there are bigger atrocities happening such as DRC but because that don't involve the Russians, no one gives a shhite.

I didn’t agree with his completely dismissive comment that we shouldn’t give a **** about people being gassed and be more concerned with undoing Tory police cuts. As the idea that we shouldn’t give a **** about anything beyond these shores is insular bollocks, that doesn’t equate to me backing launching missiles at Syria to somehow solve this issue. His post was his usual brand of hyperbole

Then what are we actually disagreeing on?
I dont think chemical attacks are a good thing either, but I honestly do not think:

    a) It's any of our business
    or
    b) That sending over missiles will do anything constructive. Other than create a lot more innocent casualties, radicalise yet more Islamists, destabilise the Middle East further and end up costing us money and possibly the lives of British service people.

Putin and Trump both ultimately want the same thing, a weaker and disjointed Europe.

Ok, its not so much that we shouldn't give a ****, more that we shouldn't give so much of a **** that we are willing to waste more lives and more money on a pissing contest with Russia.

    Wait, what?
Why would Trump want a weaker Europe?
What would the US gain from weakening their biggest ally?

A weaker and disjointed Europe reduces the EU’s trade bargaining power with the US. Trump wants to reduce the US trade deficit with both Europe and Asia. His words about wanting a strong dollar are also completely disingenuous imo, as a weaker dollar also helps in that aim.

He’s also spoken extensively about how he thinks the US overall contribution to NATO is disproportionate btw, and he expects moving forwards for Europe to cover their own arses when of comes to defence.

    I see. Makes sense.
But we wont be in the EU, so that hardly effects us.
We, hopefully, will have our own deal with the US.

Trump’s main beef with Europe is Gernany, who have a trade surplus with the US.

In Trump’s simple mind anyone who has a trade surplus with the US has cheated. He’s already tried to lure Germany into separate negotiations, ignoring EU protocol.

I will probably stick to Vilamoura this summer, but I'm always open to a last minute bargain.

Do you think he was disappointed that we chose to leave? *coughs*

When we do a trade deal with the US it’ll be worse than what was proposed with the EU, simple economics dictates that i.e. the economics of scale.

What possible weaponry do we possess that the Yanks need us for ?
I think they have got this covered and I would rather have a bad trade deal with Trump than piss off Putin.
