    noun
    noun: scapegoat; plural noun: scapegoats
    1. 1.
a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.
I don't think that was the case with Forster. He wasn't blamed because it was convenient to, he was blamed because he really was that bad for a long period of time. I agree that his confidence was probably knocked by booing/jeering ****ers in the crowd.

It is probably me being a pedantic prick over the phrase scapegoat though :D

Jeez. I think we’ve just identified one of those fans :) ... .. come on man, Forster got treated like ****, whether he was poor or not.

Use whatever word you want to describe it.

Ps. I’ve noticed how you have a tendency to put your view across and then counter it yourself in the next sentence. It’s quite useful and save us pointing it out ourselves :)

Fans also forget sometimes that footballers, even the very best, are human and sometimes make mistakes. Football is of course a team game, and in a good team playing with confidence, a mistake from one player can be covered by another player adjusting position or running a bit faster, or making a good tackle. When there are whole sequences of catastrophic errors happening time after time in front of him, and when he knows he is the last man in the defensive line, any goalkeeper’s confidence can be worn down. I just hope that the fans don’t turn on Alex McCarthy the way they did on Fraser.

Just watched Sky Referee watch and have to say the message is that it is OK for an Arsenal player to rip the shirt off a Saints player, followed by push in the back, it's red card if a Saints player just shoves an Arsenal cheat.

What can I say, I tend to have the ability to see both sides of the argument so can pre empt what people will come back at me with.

I wasn't one of those fans booing him or jeering him, but I do think he cost us a fair few points earlier in the season which could be crucial when all said and done. He is not the only player who has been poor overall this season, but as a goalkeeper they tend to be the most noticeable as the last line of defence which is why I guess a lot of people have turned on him.

See players like Forster & Redmond, in my opinion, weren't playing well because the fans were on their back and they lost all confidence.

Forster is still being highly paid by the club, he’s just been dropped on performance basis. He wasn’t dropped quickly either, he was given a good chance. I don’t see how he has been treated poorly.

Did you hear some of the abuse he was getting? Same with Redmond.

Agreed. Anyone who uses the terms "Snowflake", "Entitled" or "SJW" as a pejorative loses respect in my eyes.

Back on the game. I don't want us to be relegated, but if we are to be relegated, I want us to go down fighting - I actually saw some spirit today. Can't help thinking that if Hughes had come in before the Stoke game and we'd shown the same spirit we showed yesterday we wouldn't be in this mess.

He hasn’t been treated poorly by the club. I haven’t said that.

Even the players in the studio gave the Ref a hard time.

I really don’t think a few twats in the crowd can turn an international keeper into a bench warmer.

Just like with the fans and puel we place far too much emphasis on what some of our fan base say. We’re not actually as important as we like to think.

So you don’t think a bunch of morons standing 20 feet behind a keeper hurling abuse at everything he does, throughout every home game, can affect the way he plays?

    Right...

Redmond highlighted it in his interview so he certainly felt it. And like with most sports, a lot of the game is mental.

The fact that what happened was nowhere near the ball doesn't seem to have been taken in to consideration either.

Sadly, VvD was a complete waste of space for virtually every second of his presence on the field of play from Sept thru til Dec. That, in fact, was more destabilising to the centre back partnership case than any other factor...... and it shows!

Regarding the question that you posed....... Can I suggest that FF (this season) has/had kept far more clean sheets than has McCarthy.

Lies, damn lies and statistics, any fan that thinks that Fraser has been better than Alex this season hasn't been paying too much attention.

I actually went over to whoscored to have a look at the stats on it out of interest, and to see how many more games Forster has played. Forster has played 20 PL games to McCarthy's 12 but the thing that made laugh was the "strengths and weaknesses bit" of Saints as a whole:

It absolutely is a case of looking for someone to blame, when certain individuals are singled out following a poor team performance.

Have a look through any match day thread, and you will see a chorus of "what? How is so-and-so getting picked again?" comments before a ball has even been kicked.

Before kick off yesterday, I read one comment (not sure who by) despairing at Long and Tadic getting picked.

And the thing is this; our fans are almost invariably wrong. Every game I go to, people moan about Tadic; for all his faults, he's easily, and consistently, our most talented player and our most intelligent footballer.
