I hate the minute's applause, it should always be a minute's silence.

When they did the minute's applause recently at Wembley for Regis, Armfield, and Astori, it was so ****ing wrong.

I don't agree.i like the applause.we should celebrate the impact the person has had on our lives.silence perhaps for an early tragically lost life.but for me its applause for a life well lived.
    Each to their own though.

I actually agree with you, a life should be celebrated not mourned, and I personally feel a minutes applause is a fitting tribute, as long as it is applause only.

I've often wondered why no-one has come up with the suggestion of a combination of both methods - one minute of silence immediately followed by one minute of applause. The ref's whistle could control the timing.

With Saturday's opposition there could also be a few tears...

Agreed. This has all been discussed before anyway, but there can various problems trying to conduct a minute's silence among thousands of people in a large open stadium. If there's a move towards applause over silence I'm happy about it.

I'll be following Stuart Pearce's example, arms by my side and stood in silence.

I think the minutes applause started when Man Utd played West Ham just after George Best had died.

It started as a normal minutes and West Ham fans spontaneous started clapping.

    It's imported from the Continent.

They'll be stopping the game at a designated minute soon.

Rangers fan on TS said that they would be observing a minutes silence pre game and then applause at 5 minutes (his shirt number I presume)...

If it stops us hearing the muppets shouting on the concourse during the silence I’m up for it! Too many idiots in the world with no concept of respect! Cannot imagine what it will be like when the queen passes away?

Silence for a great player and top bloke in a football stadium?

    No.

Clap and cheer and celebrate his life.

I thought you were a fan of certain things from our continental football brothers and their approach to celebration and atmosphere?

    Or just when it suits?

Nothing to stop those people that wish to observe a silent contemplation doing that themselves whilst those that want to celebrate someone's life can applaud - or not depending on how they felt about the person.
