On a Sunday that's fine Matth.

All other days that is tea, you are correct.

Why would anyone call tea dinner?
What do they call dinner then?
And what do they call coffee? Supper?

Matth has never seduced a lady so irrelevant.

To answer though, you offer to take them out for a meal. To offer to take them out to dinner would be weirdly formal and very cringey.

What's cringey about it? Do you make Tea reservations? Take them out for a meal doesn't suggest what time of day - could be a hurried sandwich in pret a manger like I would do with colleagues. Can I buy you dinner is a normal evening invite.

    Ok just I am clear.
Some people refer to their main evening meal as tea?

So what do they call the hot drink? Tea as well? Or is that called something different?

Sounds awfully confusing, and yes, I would offer to take someone out to dinner. I have never heard of someone offering to take someone out to tea!!
Unless I wanted to take them out for an actual cup of tea.

Do they have a different name for lunch? They call it coffee?
Or is it just because northerners were so impoverished that they actually used to drink tea as their main evening meal?

A sandwich is hardly a meal.

I'd give them a clue as to what time by booking a table and then telling them. Not that hard really.

Yes, and there's this place on a map above Watford gap often referred to as the north of England.

No offence meant. Just puzzled as to why they would name their evening meal after the hot drink is all.
    Sounds bizarre to me.

If someone says 'will you just bear with me a minute', do you immediately assume that they want you to go out for a walk with a grizzly?

Just to confuse you further, if you were going out for an evening meal you might say you were off out for dinner, but usually you’d just be on your way home for tea.
