Five ways to improve your fish and chips
For whatever reason, Good Friday and to some extent the Easter weekend will always be associated with fish.

And fortunately for Hull and it’s proud fishing heritage, we aren’t short of a decent chippy or two.

Think of the main places to go to and they are well known across the city - places like Papas, East Park Chippy, Bob Carvers and A&M - they roll of the tongue.

But there is another, less heralded chippy that might just serve the best platter in the city.

    We were impressed
For those who have been, they will always go back and rave about Cave Street Fisheries, located just off Beverley Road.

It’s your standard chippy, nothing much to shout about from the inside or exterior barring the delicious aroma of deep fried fish and chips.

The prices are reasonable - me and my partner both went for a medium fish and chip special with mushy peas, which came to just over £12.

But what strikes you as soon as you unload the meal onto your plate is it’s size - the portions are HUGE. We only went for a medium haddock and that and the portion of chips was nearly spilling over the side.

Fortunately, the portion sizes don’t make up for a lack of taste - the fish and chips are everything you could want from it.

Although the chips weren’t as crispy as my partner would have liked, they were delicious and the fish was cooked well in very tasty batter.

It could have left us wanting more - but fortunately the portions made up for that.

Although it might not have as bigger name, Cave Street more than makes up for it.

Not a regular but each of the 3 times I've tried Cave Street the chips were duff, soggy and greasy. Portion size doesn't make up for that for me.

Agreed, quality over quantity every time. The portion size would never enter my head, it’s all about how good it is.

Good Friday tapas for me, off to Porta in Altrincham, absolutely beautiful, couple of bottles of red wine. Cracking little independent Spanish place, only issue is you can't book but I am sure we will be fine.

Never knew Good Friday fish and chips was a thing....

Think it is 1pm. Assumed he was giving himself ten minutes to sit and soak up the unique atmosphere and batner coming over the airwaves. My prediction - 10/10 for entertainment, 10/10 for atmosphere.

True. Some people think Cave Street is good. Others ruin the quintissential English takeaway with foreign concoctions. I don't ask for mushy peas on my Biryani.

Cave st did used to be very good but that's going back maybe ten years. I know a lot of people who've given up on it. I use Fish and chip kitchen on Princes ave which is superb, eat in or take away and it has a bar. Controversial I know, but I always have a double Bulliet whilst I wait.

Kemptons burger tip... Make your own and use best lean beef mince. Most TV chefs recommend fatty mince. They are wrong. Also, try it using a crusty roll.
