And then throw in the fact that no one is building any council houses - and you are left with the private rented sector, which is almost always a rip-off.

I feel 'mid generation' on this site, not an oldie, and not a young one.

I am pretty happy with how I had it :)

I don't agree with the old ones who will just moan about the good old days as they are now bored and retired and I don't agree with the young ones who feel they should have it all now for nothing. Come to think of it, I felt like that when I was in my 20s and I'm sure i'll moan about the good days in 15-20 years time :). Maybe it isn't a generation thing, but an age thing...

As a baby boomer I think my children’s generation have it really tough in terms of job security, student debt, company pensions, housing, and environmental issues which their children will curse my generation for causing. My grandchildren have to be watched like hawks every second, even in a supposedly safe situation, and the thought of my grandson going off into the fields or down by the river all day with his mates would give my daughter palpitations. I feel privileged to have grown up in a country not threatened by war, except the sadly still-present danger of nuclear holocaust.

Quite honestly if we were suddenly transported back to a time with 2 channels of black and white TV, no mobile phones, no internet, and a fraction of today’s traffic on the roads I would probably put up with the lack of the good stuff we have today. I would, of course, miss talking to you lot.

I can confirm it to be a rip off. The quality of rented houses in Southampton is, for the most part, pretty **** too, although you wouldn't know it judging by the cost! I get paid less than the average wage, but if I were on a minimum wage job it'd be near impossible to pay rent and save for a house.

As it happens I don't save for a house anyway...as I'm a reckless youth and I decided that I'd rather spend my money on doing things. That's my choice though. I can't do both so I chose one and live with the consequences good and bad.

It is one thing I've never understood. Surely there were just as many creepy weirdos around when I was growing up and my parents would happily let me go off with my mates to the park (I'm talking late 90s early 00s here before I was a teenager) for the whole day. I've always just put it down to how quickly and easily information is available nowadays that it appears much worse than when I was growing up, rather than there actually being lots more examples of kids being molested/killed/kidnapped. I have no idea on actual stats on the matter though so could be completely wrong.

I went to uni, got a good job due to my degree and moved to London. I can enjoy myself on my salary so consider myself lucky. I haven't saved any money since moving a few months ago though for sure.

There wasn't the fear of it then though, just look at how much institutionalised abuse was covered up.

I remember being told to not talk to strangers etc. But it wasn't like everyone spoke about the fear of nonces like they do now, which is probably a good thing.

I feel like I was born in the wrong generation anyway :(

As for the talk of generations. I finished college and thought I would see what sort of job I could get, went and got a well paying job (relative to my experience/qualifications) but it was incredibly boring and being a self entitled young person I couldn't be bothered to work my way up the ladder into a less boring job. I had the grades to go to uni so worked for 6 months in that job, applied for uni, got in, quit the job and went travelling with the money I'd saved working then went to uni for 3 years. Got a not very good degree as I didn't really want to go to uni so didn't take it too seriously, worked numerous jobs after uni (all temp roles as I finished in the middle of that job crash thing) so gave me an idea of what I didn't like doing. Found something I didn't really like but was good at and got a job in it. Now almost 7 years after leaving uni I own my first house and am on a decent salary. I have been lucky in that I fell into something I was good at and seem to be an amicable sort of fellow so have found progression relatively straight forward.

Yeah but that is what I mean. With the internet and news as they are now you hear about everything happening everywhere, which makes it seem like it is almost an inevitability it will happen if you let your child wander the parks around your home.

I had a discussion with a large group of fellow students when I was in University in the 60s and every girl had experienced sexual molestation in one form or another....ranging from flashing to near rape, so not new.

Not that much. Just bought a house with my partner in Andover with a joint income of around £50k. Deposit with fees was in excess of 20k. Then the government took away stamp duty for first time buyers.

Back to the Semi Final. Bring it on, looking forward to it.

I've just read through the most recent posts on this thread (since St Godders' post) and I think that mentioning the FA Cup Semi Final is probably tantamount to being off topic. Well, off the topic of this thread, anway <whistle>

It is a vicious cycle though isn't it, so many jobs require unnecessary qualifications! I see no problems with people going to enjoy and further themselves, as I see it as a transition time between school and work i.e. the transition into adulthood. You are right a lot of people should not do academic course, mini-degrees to give other skills would be better suited, however if you limit to those who don't need to work you are not giving equal opportunities and people like J K Rowling or Steve Jobs would never have fulfilled their potential.

Apologies for derailing the thread, I guess this is what happens when there is a lack of football :s!

How many people on here are planning on going to both Chelsea games and if you could only win one which would it be?

Just the semi final for me, I’m pretty skint at the moment so just sticking to that.

I’ll take the semi win just to get us to another final

Will be hovering over the "Purchase Tickets" button at 8.59 am on Wednesday.

Last season we were in the 2nd most expensive, blue (lower tier) section, quite near the pitch. View wasn't great really, and if I recall correctly I had some difficulty selecting specific seats.

Anybody who bought tickets in the yellow (upper tier) last season, how did you rate the view from up there? Not sure I want to spend an extra £20 per ticket for a view that is no better (possibly not as good) as the ones in upper tiers.
