It was going nowhere near the side netting. Look at the screenshot I've just taken from the replay. The keeper's feet are still on the floor where he was standing. It was a good save and the penalty was hit hard but it was in a good area to make a save.

Looking at some good I saw in Redmond today, I have decided to hit the "reset" button on some of our players that, over this season, I had not been impressed with. I will give the benefit of the doubt to these players and put it down to being told to play negative and defensive football. I will watch a game when Redmond and Davis are involved, but there better be improvements.

Good Comment and well said - just looking at comments and can't believe how negative some of you, yeh the first half wasn't great but there were signs that we were looking to move the ball forward quicker. Talk about society wanting everything yesterday. I am now going to read the comments after the second half - what is the betting a see a 180 degrees reverse gear from sum!

We were abject in the first half and because Wigan did not take the opportunity to get a good head start in the first half, I had a feeling we would win. The first 45 minutes were dreadful but the second half produced a decent display. I thought that the penalty miss was unfortunate but it was a terrific save to be honest. I would not go as far as saying it was a great performance yet the last 45 demonstrated that the squad has it within itself to improve it's position in the league. I did not get that impression in the first half though. It is clearly a result to build on and, credit to Wigan, this was against a team whose approach belied their league status. This game was a potential banana-skin and we avoided it.

Glad to see Gabbi back. We looked to carry more threat with him up front although I would have to say that I am not a fan of Carillo. Does anyone else think that he is a good signing ? I just get the impression that he hasn't settled and feel he will be off-loaded in the summer. He is not the answer to our goal-scoring problems.
I think Austin will get the nod as soon as he is fit.

And a shout out to McCarthy - hasn`t put a foot wrong since he got his chance. Came and got his crosses today, and must give confidence to the rest of the defence.

To be honest, until the penalty save I thought that McCarthy was MotM.

I disagree. We were not abject or dreadful in the first half. We were clearly second best but in general the defending was pretty resolute. Had Gabbi chipped the penalty to the same spot then I would have said it was poor, but hitting it as hard as he did, I can understand not risking an attempt at the side netting. So we do agree on that. Carrillo I just don’t know but I also agree that he hasn’t inspired confidence. Maybe he will come good under Hughes? One can only hope.

sorry we were poor. If the conditions were so bad why are we bypassing the midfield and not playing the ball down to feet and just hoofing the ball up to our forwards. And was the wind blowing so hard it blew our midfield 20 yards back from their midfield? We improved 180 deg in the second half as do the comments posted. At half time we all knew what had to be said and what had to change but I cannot see that having the wind in our backs was the reason we won, change of tactics and good substitutions won us the game . Wigan still managed to create several chances l the second half against the wind.

Thought that was a cracking cup game. Really enjoyed watching it, even the first half where we struggled a little.
Credit to Wigan too, they've had a great cup run and played well again today.
Overall a lot of positives to take away from the game. Handy that Hughes now gets two weeks to get to know the players better and set down some of his ideas.
    Oh and Wembley :smiley-finger007::smiley-finger007::smiley-finger007:

Big shout out to the four and a bit thousand fans that travelled up, great effort and support all game :emoticon-0148-yes:. Out sang Wigan for almost the whole game.

We may have been poor, but given the playing conditions, given low confidence, given a new manager, I thought as fans we may have shown a little bit more patience and understanding, sadly I am obviously naïve in today's era.

    Channon

We didn't muster one attempt on goal in the first half and I think there was some like 11 Wigan corners to nil. Watching on BBC, the impression I got was that we were disjointed and that our passing seemed to be particularly poor. Until the half hour mark, Saints hadn't turned up and no one played well. I felt that Wigan had a better ability to distribute the ball and had the lion's share of possession. What Wigan failed to do was take advantage of the opportunities presented to them. As far as for the defending being resolute, the defence looked to be under constant pressure because the midfield could not retain the ball.

The penalty was well-taken but, unfortunately, the goalkeeper proved to be even better. No criticism of Gabbi , just great goal-keeping.

The second half was a marked improvement, largely due to the quality of the passing and playing at a greater tempo. I much prefer it when football is played at pace and it will permit more skilful players to dominate. The sluggish performance in the first half could be argued to have made Wigan look better than they were. However, I would not want to take anything away from the home side who made a competition of the match and were worthy adversaries. I am just clag that Cook is doing a good job at Wigan instead of Portsmouth !!

Cedric's goals was amazing and totally out of character. I was not aware that he could finish like that as I am usually ducking in the stand where I sit whenever he shoots because the ball usually fizzes well over the crossbar. The nice thing about this afternoon is that some of the players looked to be regaining their confidence in the second half. Room for a bit of confidence, I think.

    Cheers

    Ian

Struggling to get used to this Wembley malarkey! Not a shame epic as Long but vs Liverpool but absolutely buzzing all the same.

Thank you Mark Hughes, I think I may start enjoying the football again!

Maybe it's because I have a lot more faith in him than FF. None of those corners particularly worried me. Maybe I'm just naive and far too trusting :D
