https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/chris-coleman-says-sunderlands-relegation-14420245 Coleman says that as long as the club's owners want him to stay on he will, if we get relegated. He's got another two years on his contract after this season. This is good news to me, cos I'd been a bit concerned that he'd want shot of us. I know that he has his critics, but I think he's a good bloke and a solid manager who has had his hands tied (and his legs broken for good measure) by Short. He is the right sort of person to rebuild a team from the ground up, which is what we'll be doing next season.
I don't know if he's worth keeping or not, yeah he makes the right noises but who gives a **** about that? Not been abale to judge him as he's been given an incapable squad and nothing to improve it with. Don't want him sacked like. Just hard to tell if he's any good or not, same for Grayson.
I care that he says the right things in public because it means he's saying the right things to the players too. There's not a lot else we could ask from a manager who has no resources other than motivating the players they have and that's what I've seen from his teams.
That doesn't mean **** to me fella, don't care if the players hear the right thing or not, they can't go out and do it and that's the problem. I don't buy that managers say the same thing to their players as they do to the cameras, always thought that to be a bullshit myth.
Disagree with you on that then, you seem to be saying that it doesn't matter at all what a manager's personality is like and that's not true. I've got no issues with the level of effort the players have put in under Coleman and Grayson too, which has been a big problem for us with the likes of misery Moyes who couldn't motivate a player to save his life.
It doesn't. Any personality can carry respect mate, at the same time any personality can lose it. Complete twats and total gems have led people to some of the the greatest achievements possible. In fact, Howard Wilkinson as an example, had the personality of a bastard, Last English manager to win the top flight, that very same personality got us a record low points total. Proves the personality thing is just a load of superstitious bollocks. Fans just like to have their own ears appeased to feel better about things, that's fine, but lets not pretend it's about something else. Think it's more about fan psychology this soundbite bullshit than anything else, and if giving a good interview is as important to our fan base as the things that matter than no wonder managers fail here, cause fan priority is all to cock imo. All that matters to me is building a capable squad. That needs money and time, after that happens I'll judge him and not until regardless of what he says in the press, cause it's just a load of bollocks, you don't win games in the press room. Coleman has been brutally negative recently and had no **** at all proving media bites are more about whether your face fits or not with the fans and f all about the players.
To be brutally honest lads, it doesn't matter who's in charge next season. If Short is still there, you're cattled.
This, not going to judge any manager good or bad under these conditions. I just want the bloke to get fair crack at it and he's not getting it and won't with Short here.
Its impossible to judge any manager under the current circumstances. For me the damage was done under Brucie, Mon and Dour Dave, who all had the fans on their side at first, but blew it big time, costing us a fortune in the process. We are still paying the price for their mistakes. Coleman has been too negative in the last couple of games, but other than that he has done as well as can be expected, and I am pleased to hear that he is staying. Relegation is a near certainty now, and if we do go down, we should give him a chance to rebuild the club. That could take another two years just to get back to where we were at the start of this season, but with a totally different playing staff built around fitness and teamwork rather than experience.
Well posting this before kickoff hopefully bites me in the arse, but...... 5 at the ****ing back? I'm starting to think CC is a better motivational speaker than a football manager. Poor decision at home.
The only positives that CC can offer is that a) he knows the club (will do by the summer anyway) and youngsters coming through b) he has a wider array of experience that realistic alternatives c) he's still a big name and in terms of league 1 a huge name, players are more likely to want to play for him and he's dealt with the big clubs as Wales manager so may have an 'in' with loans when he has more time in the market. Negatives... possibly costly compared to alternatives; has he ever got a team promoted or even challenging at the top of a league? Part of me worries that when entering the Championship Sunderland appointed a manager with Championship experience and spent no money in a summer which seemed to scream of consolidating. This next summer if Coleman goes it's easy to see a League 1 level manager being appointed and no money being spent again as Short consolidates for life in League 1. If CC stays it suggests he believes promotion is the target and is going to fight for it - I think it's a good message.
That's a fair assessment, I'd also add as a positive that he's the right sort of personality to get a group of players pulling in the right direction but it's matter of opinion how much stock you should put in that.
I'd keep him if just to break the cycle of sacking managers to be honest. That said. Who our manager is isn' important when compared to the effect of having a ****stain of an owner.
You may laugh, but if you go down you could do a lot worse than Steve Cotterill to get you back at the first attempt. His pedigree in L1 is probably the best of any current manager, it's just once he gets teams out of L1 he struggles.
I'd have said that personality is a major factor in how successful a manager is. The mix of personalities has to be right but having someone who is capable of firing people up is always a good start. Saracens rugby club (and if you don't follow rugby union they are arguably the most successful club in Europe over the last few years) put a massive amount of work into making sure that all signings and appointments have the right kind of personality to fit into the 'Saracens way'. Unless you're capable of true tactical innovation, which very few managers really are, your only tools are man management (which requires personality) and the ability to sign the right players for your team (in which personality should be a major consideration).
Which is what Brian Clough and Peter Taylor did with Forest all them years ago. Revie did it at Leeds and Paisley did at Liverpool. being a manager must start with getting the right personalities in. Even outside of football in regular business Team work and planning is a must, nothing is achieved with individuals
Been there, done that with Howard Wilkinson as a double act and in true Sunderland style, it all ended in tears
