Agree to disagree I guess. It’s not like it’s a shock Pellegrino has been sacked. We’ve had months and months to find someone good.

Ange Postecoglou, the ex-Australia national coach is an interesting one in the betting. I mean, it'll never be him (he's only just joined his current Japanese club) but I do love some of the names that get thrown up!

Not sure anyone would disagree with the acted ages ago comment , we just cannot in the next few games take a risk , who's to say Hughes will even keep us up ?

If he can't then who else is available with PL experience right now that we could get at VERY short notice ?

Just checked ... sacked after 5 games 4 EPL losses and one Carabou win ... scoring none and conceding 7 in the EPL ...Roy took over and lost the next 2 games 5-0 and 4-0 - admittedly against City and United <laugh>

We would have had more options if he had been sacked at Christmas. Now we have backed ourselves into a corner from our own doing.

If it`s Sparky, then so be it. Sometimes managers fit a club, and sometimes they don`t. Look at Strachan. Mediocre at Coventry, good at Saints, OK at Celtic, absolutely dire at Boro.
Being an accomplished striker himself, it`ll be interesting to see what he does in that department. Surely he`ll play Austin if he`s fit.

I know things have been bad recently but it’s not like we are adrift at the bottom of the league. We’re not even in the relegation zone so are totally in control if our own destiny. We have a pretty impressive squad so pretty sure a half decent manager could save us.

But it's the club thinking of the long term that has landed us in this mess in the first place. They were convinced Pellegrino would be a long term success which is why they took so long to sack him. It was only after Saturday's completely lifeless display that the club acted. And the display was that bad even they couldn't ignore it! So I'm not going to object to the board thinking of the short term right now.

I have no love whatsoever for Hughes, and he'd be pretty low on my list of candidates. But I'll take him in place of Pellegrino, even if I'll be hoping that he runs off in the summer.

Think you'll find Roys first game was a 1-0 defeat to a certain south coast club ;)

Fans seem to be very unrealistic about who we can attract, particularly in the situation we are in.

As far as I recall, Ron was hardly a popular choice on here. High profile player cum journeyman manager; on paper a decent enough start to his managerial career, but a lot of 'meh' in more recent years. Doesn't sound a million miles away from Hughes. And, statistically, Ron turned into our most successful PL manager ever.

Right place, right time. What had gone before didn't really matter. He was what we needed at that time. A strong personality, with huge confidence in himself. A reputation to be respected in the football community. Someone who, at least in my view, was engaging with the fans.

Look, his football was never, ever on a par with Poch's. In fact, we had some real dire under Ron (although in the main, there wasn't much to complain about, certainly in retrospect). But we didn't necessary need it to be on such a par. In the previous six months we had lost half our team, our chairman and our manager. We're not Man Utd; having that all hit us in such a short space of time could, maybe should, have finished us.

I'm going round the houses somewhat here, I know. But my point is that I can see potential for Hughes to be our next right place, right time manager. He ticks sufficient boxes for me that we could do with right now. (I also think, if the worst happens, that he could bring us back up again.) Is it a long-term option for us if we stay in the PL? Probably not. I'd be surprised if we didn't find ourselves parting ways at some point over the following two years, should we survive this season. But beggars can't be choosers right now, and he really appeals to me in that scenario.

Yep. Periods of success really have left us with some delusional folk. We have eight league games left, the quicker someone is at the training ground the better.
