Don't forget, Newcastle attracted Benitez in very similar circumstances. Lure of good premier league club with summer money will mean good managers will at least be interested
I think the truth of the matter is that we are no worse off managerless than we were with MP2. He has ground our performances into paste. Anyone coming in now has a completely clean slate and no responsibility. Saving us from relegation is a monumental task.
Just seen this on bbc website ,have always thought the fans attitude towards Hoddle stank Southampton permanent managers in the Premier League Games Wins Draws Losses Win % Points Points per game Ronald Koeman 76 36 15 25 47.4 123 1.62 Glenn Hoddle 45 18 11 16 40 65 1.44 Mauricio Pochettino 54 19 18 17 35.2 75 1.39 Paul Sturrock 13 5 2 6 38.5 17 1.31 Gordon Strachan 93 31 29 33 33.3 122 1.31 Alan Ball 59 18 22 19 30.5 76 1.29 Claude Puel 38 12 10 16 31.6 46 1.21 Dave Jones 98 31 19 48 31.6 112 1.14 Graeme Souness 38 10 11 17 26.3 41 1.08 Ian Branfoot 66 18 14 34 27.3 68 1.03 Nigel Adkins 22 5 7 10 22.7 22 1.00 David Merrington 38 9 11 18 23.7 38 1.00 Mauricio Pellegrino 30 5 13 12 16.7 28 0.93 Harry Redknapp 22 4 8 10 18.2 20 0.91 Steve Wigley 14 1 6 7 7.1 9 0.64
It's why I'm suggesting his name. I know it probably sounds ludicrous, and the vast majority of people will totally dismiss. I've even said myself that I don't see any long-term future in such an appointment. But as you say, most managers will wait. Why would they risk managing in the Championship next year? Newcastle getting Rafa two years ago when it a difficult position was very unique (and even that wasn't as late as we've left it). People are welcome to mention Tuchel, Mancini, AVB etc. But come on, the best we could hope is to appoint one of these guys in the summer. Not right now. Realistically, without the likes of Sam available. we're looking at three month appointment here. (And even if they keep us up, it probably needs to stay at that. Otherwise, we'd be the next Sunderland in no time - eg they should have got rid of Di Canio, despite him keeping them up.) Silva is possibly the one exception to that.
Not disputing that, and it'd be an appointment i support in the summer regardless of division. It'd be a hell of a gamble now though and surely there's someone out there better suited, even if it's a short term until the end of season job. Absolutely. Along with the added sweetener of a nice fat bonus for keeping us up.
