It’s about time the West woke up to what they’re dealing with here. They seem to think this is some kind of return to a Cold War, with all it’s ‘rules’. It isn’t.

We’re dealing with a highly organised Mafia. There are no rules. This is more akin to dealing with a very large criminal organisation, not a different ideology.

A war wouldn't last very long. They'd just turn off the gas and we're ****ed.

War with Russia is pretty much an inevitability - if you're Ukrainian. Or Chechen.

If you're Latvian, Lithuanian or Estonian, I think you'd be worried.

    Should we be worried? Probably.

We won’t start one. We’d get annihilated. Especially if all these new missiles they’ve got actually work.

None of the West’s navies can defend against them.

I was listening to a programme on Radio 4 the other day where they were discussing how the West should have brought Russia in from the cold (pun intended) after the fall of communism, but instead almost 'sneered' at its demise and made moves to cozy up to all of the satellite communist countries, bringing them into the EU, whilst simultaneously pushing Russia further away. There was at some points in recent history, some moves to invite Russia into NATO and the EU, but they never really got off the ground.

Given the West's hostility to Russia, it's hardly surprising that a hard line figure like Putin, who plays tough, has come to power and stayed there. They have very little other friends on the global scene and have seen the UK/EU and US dominate the geopolitical and economic stage, whilst making attempts to bring former 'compatriots' China and the aforementioned Satellite states of USSR onside with the 'western' doctrine of Capitalism. Russia seems to have been left with a poor hand to play, so it needs to play and aggressive one to get it's own way.

No. Especially not because of an ex Russian spy getting offed.

War with Russia would result in such huge losses to both sides that it isn't worth it for anyone to go down that route. It'd set all countries involved back by decades. The US and Russia have the capability to basically destroy the world and that isn't going to be allowed to kick off based on small conflicts, political gain etc... It would take a big event to actually make either side contemplate proper war.

Sanctions, expelling diplomats, arresting spy's etc... Are all things that could potentially happen, but I just don't see how a war could be seen as an acceptable outcome by any of the countries who would end up involved.

I agree with all of that, with one caveat. As NSIS pointed out, Russia do not play by the 'rules' and with this nerve agent attack, it's still possible that a substance produced by the Russian military could have found it's way into the criminal fraternity, as the Russian Mafia are so entwined with the State. So given those factors, it's possible that they could unleash a catastrophic event, that the West simply have to respond to with force.

There's a bit of a hidden rule around my manor - "don't **** with the Russians".

I'm a firm believer in that and would advise everyone else lived by it.

It wouldn't even be a war.

Putin apologetics. They could've just acted like a normal ****ing country and not robbed the **** out of the place.
It's not like they don't have any resources or land, is it?
