Get to know our next Sky Bet Championship opponents - Norwich City - a little better, with six facts you may not have known about the Canaries.

1 Norwich City were formed following a meeting at the Criterion Cafe in Norwich on 17 June 1902 and played their first competitive match against Harwich & Parkeston, at Newmarket Road in September 1902.

2 The original Carrot Road stadium - the largest construction job in the city since the building of Norwich Castle - was "miraculously" built in just 82 days and was referred to by club officials as 'The eighth wonder of the world'.

3 Norwich has been voted one of the best nights out in Europe for the past ten years by trip advisor reviewers.

4 Kevin Keelan holds the record for Norwich appearances, having played 673 first-team matches between 1963 and 1980. Ralph Hunt holds the record for the most goals scored in a season, 31 in the 1955/56 season in Division Three (South), with Johnny Gavin the top scorer over a career – 122 between 1948-1955. Mark Bowen holds the club record for most international caps, with 35 for Wales.

5 During the inaugural 1992/93 Premier League campaign, Norwich City quickly emerged as surprise title contenders, before faltering in the final weeks to end the campaign in third place - their highest-ever league finish.

6 Current Head Coach Daniel Farke became the Canaries' first-ever foreign head coach in its 115-year history when he was appointed by the Norfolk outfit last summer.

Norwich are called the Canaries due to a combination of factors. The local Police used to sport yellow waistcoats, like their Lincolnshire "yellow bellied" neighbours, and donated their old jackets to the miners welfare fund, for collier workers to make them more visible down t' pit. In the early days, the pitch was poor and often sand covered, like the bottom of a bird cage...and from that, the canaries hatched.

Norwich City are the only team to have fielded a father, uncle, brother and son from the same family in the same team. He played in goal.

Norwich City are the only football club to share their name with a sexually titilating acronym.

Norwich was the first place in the world to use sealed containers to preserve food. The business funded the first football club, but the local education system meant that the Canneries name wasn't taken up as planned.

Norwich had aspirations to expand, and bought land in cheshire, claiming it as a 'local' commuter rail terminal. Sadly, the used the sign writer from the cannaries, so nobody made the link, and Norwich Victoria developed independently under a slightly different name.

CityMan will want signed statements on oath for number 3. And still wouldn't believe it. Must admit I am sceptical about that one myself.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that Norwich is the 6th most visited city in England, an average of 115,000 a day believe it or not.

Sixteen Revelations Of Divine Love by Dame Julian of Norwich, written about 1393, is thought to have been the first book in English written by a woman.

In 2008, the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library had more visitors (1,500,695) and lent more books (1,139,090) than any other in the UK.

In 2007, Norwich became Britain’s first City of Refuge for persecuted writers and their families, committed to upholding and campaigning for freedom of speech.

Norwich has the largest walled centre and longest run of medieval defences in England.

The 'wich, in Norwich indicates it was originally a salt mine.

Norfolkese has a particular rich animal vocabulary including jasper (wasp), dodman (snail), pishmire (ant) and hamser (heron), kewter for money and to pingle, meaning to play with food.

After 1565 many weavers came to Norwich fleeing religious persecution in what is now Holland and Belgium. They brought their canaries with them. Soon the native people of Norwich adopted rearing canaries as a hobby. By the 18th century Norwich was famous for its canaries and today Norwich football team is nicknamed the Canaries.

Norwich was the first place in the UK to use postcodes.
