Following Nigel was one of the biggest hardships faced by MP1. But his record was decent & his blue print fitted well. His impact with the players was also immediately noticeable. Whereas MP2 followed someone who was considered dull. We were ready for change*. We were told he had an exciting high press tactic, when in truth it was the opposite. We had every right to be concerned, and ten games in you could see the fear was relevant. He is one of the strangest appointments the club has ever made, and that list includes the like of Jan/Mark, Paul Sturrock & Branfoot. Bewildering.
Question then, if you believe that, then what was the degree of gamble for both Everton and Crystal Palace. Surely success was a gimme in both cases, no?
I knew that De Boer would fail at Palace so his appointment was a big gamble, Koeman had a successful season last time but lost his way this season. But it is common sense to think that a manager that has very limited experience of managing in a European league and none in England is more of a gamble than one that has that experience. We should've appointed a man that has had more than one season in Europe IMO. How much could Les Reed really have known about Pellegrino when he appointed him?
I thought the last kick goal a few seconds after the time was up when we were drawing at City was "unlucky" rather than "awful". Vin
So, if I understand you correctly, you knew that De Boer would fail; even though he had a better managerial career record than did Koeman. Fact is BOTH gambles failed. And, I believe, that many Saints fans were clamouring for De Boer to become the replacement here after Puel departed. Lucky escape then it would seem there too then.
We have had some crap luck this season, no denying that. But we should have done more to make the luck not account for as many points dropped. But, the officials not seeing Watford's handball, or not sending off Toon's captain for a blatant offence at the weekend, is that filed under luck or incompetence? We've had a fair bit of that go against us as well.
Not sure that SFC had six million-odd to follow that route. And some behind the scenes issues made things inevitable that he would go for the money offered by Everton.
I knew that De Boer would fail because he was abysmal at Inter. My dear old Mum would get success as Ajax manager. I can't remember a single poster wanting De Boer as Manager on here. How much do you reckon Les Reed knew about Pellegrino, I mean there wasn't much to go on was there?
Just to clear this up again, we have had 10 managers in the last 10 years, as follows: Pearson Poortvliet Wotte Pardew Wilkins Adkins Pochettino Koeman Puel Pellegrino If we go back to the beginning of the 2007-08 season, we can add Burley and Dodd/Gorman So technically 13 managers in 10 seasons, which is a far cry from the 40 years between 1955 and 1995, when we had just 5.
But football has changed dramatically in that time. Gone are the days of giving a manager a chance. The money in the game means clubs change on a whim. I’m not saying I agree with that, but to stick with one that is plainly awful and has shown no signs of improvement defies logic. I genuinely want to be fair to a seemingly nice man. Plus Koeman’s losing run taught me not to slate a manager too quickly, but Pellegrino has failed in every single department.
Just to jog yer memory then...... so many Saints fans were seeking the appointment of De Boer that he was installed as 2 to 1 favourite for the post. But if having a selective memory floats your boat; then n that case, stay happy.
Selective reading - he quite clearly says “on here”. But if selective reading floats your boat, stay happy.
Thank you laces. Obviously, the speculation on here (re CP's demise/replacement) never mentioned De Boer or any of the other 'runners & riders' that were in the frame or in thoughts of the "606 posters" Will grudgingly take your word for it............ can't be arsed to check that far back.
Of course he was mentioned. We discuss lots of things on here. Some good, some bad. But just like people complaining on here about the board/management doesn’t mean they moan and boo at games, discussing managerial options doesn’t mean they’re favoured.
