Same here. In some ways, it's a nostaligic shame. In most other ways, it's personal evolution and advancement. Still want the ****ers to win. But at what cost? Not mine.
It seemed the right thing to do at the time. If Banks hadn't been nobbled, if Astle hadn't missed the sort of chance he normally tucked away with no problem... An idiot is not a word I would use about Sir Alf.
Personally I find it nauseating when people proudly go on about how little interest they've got in England now, particularly when it's accompanied by how another team is so much better. It's exactly the same as saying "I aren't watching City any more, much more entertainment watching Liverpool."
Why is it? Some people aren’t nationalistic in the slightest and have zero interest in supporting their country at any sport, but on the flip side are proud to support their local football team. People like me for example:
People like that are usually first in line to shout 'ENG-GER-LAND' when we win or deride the team when we lose considering they have 'zero interest' in it.
I do know what you mean , I think a lot of the time it's just frustration . I aren't one who says England have had **** teams in the last few competitions , maybe not world class players, but we have had plenty who do it in the league and champions league and only think it comes down to attitude why we constantly fall short , it isn't helped by ex players who admit afterwards people's minds are occupied on other things like losing 250k at poker etc , I'd happily support **** players if that's all England had, but I just believe we are **** because they do not have the right attitude and that's harder to support - tho I still will
K. I wasn't meaning you, but people bragging that they used to support England but now don't because Germany are so much better, is plastic as **** and people wouldn't dream of saying it about City.
Huh? Its most definitely not the same (unless you're suggesting someone is not watching England anymore at all, but is choosing to watch Spain, for example, every time they play...but I don't think anyone is saying that are they?)
"I don't like England any more, they're ****. Germany are much better." "I don't like City any more, they're ****. Liverpool are much better." One is trendy to say and gets people nodding and liking in agreement. The other makes you a plastic ****.
Another problem with England these days while I'm on my high horse is they hand caps round like sweets , used to mean something to a player to earn a call up , now you just don't have to be **** for 10 games and you are in
I think you need to climb down off your high horse. Not everybody thinks football is the be all and end all in life. And I don't think anybody is going to support another country over theirs.
I hardly watch much football now ( I don't even watch a full City match on Sky just bits of it ) but watching England is painful.
Football doesn't have to be the be all and end all. I'm just saying it's **** how people go on and on about how little interest they have in England, it's ridiculous how popular this message is. Anything surrounding England is dominated by people taking glee in pointing out how **** they are. Any England match thread on here is full of normally reasonably posters just looking desperately for a reason to moan while we're smashing some minnow nation 4-0. I just scrolled past a BBC thing on Facebook where they asked who should go to the world cup, and cos of this thread I thought I'd have a glance at the comments, sure enough it was just comment after comment of moaning that it doesn't matter who goes, they're all ****. It's just way too trendy to be a **** about England.
In fact look at this very thread. It was about a young player choosing Scotland instead of England but people couldn't resist the opportunity to turn it into another excuse to have a moan about England.
