I know you didn't like her but do you really think Maggie Thatcher would have let Europe walk all over us?

 

I'm not sure he mentioned him directly but I think this answer in the Q&A might have been a Major hint in that direction

Major accepts that is an issue. Some people in the campaign over-egged the threats, he says, when they were talking about long-term economic impacts.

But now almost all experts say Brexit will be bad for the economy, he says.

Personally, he is rather in favour of experts. If he has to have a tooth pulled, he would rather go to someone who has done it before, he says.

Major says Brexit will hurt people “at the bottom of the heap” first.

 

So in short the obvious conclusions to be drawn are: Chesh is a masochist and OLOF wasn't bright enough to spot the bullshit.
I have to say the grey man has exceeded my expectations of him.

This is actually a huge thing. Don’t underestimate it, ex Prime Ministers do not criticise openly the performance and policies of a sitting PM of the same party. They just don’t do it, yes they have minor comments but this is a major attack

In fact it’s not just huge, it’s Major

 

She is completely, utterly out of her depth

 

She always was, they just managed to hide it until the election exposed it.

 

Major is a very very bitter man trying to get his own back.

 

He has no issue with Theresa May, it’s more the IDS type of people he hates

And whatever issues he has, he has had them for a long time and been well behaved. That does not detract from how stunning this intervention is.

Rather than attack the man, see this for what it is, an attack on a policy and approach, not on May herself

Major says he has no intention of quitting the party he has belonged to since he was 16. He says he is trying to put the party on the right course. And he points out that he hardly mentioned Theresa May in his speech.

Did John Major give a free vote on Maastricht? This is where he really is guilty of being a complete humbug. He whipped that through in the most aggressive whipping in modern history. For that PM to then say ‘oh it should be a free vote’, is either forgetting how he behaved himself, ignoring how he behaved himself, or just straight forward hypocrisy.
