Hi all, Four years ago and again two years later, the mods allowed me to post a message similar to this one. I hope they will be kind enough to allow me to do so again this year. Four years ago I, along with nearly 40 of my 6th Form students and fellow teachers, ran the Newport Half Marathon to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre. For those of you who are not aware of Velindre, they basically look after every cancer sufferer and their families in the South Wales region, both pre and post treatment. My friend Siân had already been receiving care from Velindre for a few years after being diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that predominately affects teenagers and young adults, so I felt very strongly about supporting the charity. Our small team managed to raise over £8000 for this fantastic cause. Two years later we decided to run again, and again both staff and students rallied to support the incredible work of Velindre. This time 52 staff and 6th Formers took up the challenge to reach a target of £10,000 – not only did we reach this target, we smashed through it, raising over £14,000. Both of these efforts were supported by some donations from not606ers and I have been incredibly grateful for your generosity. This year, we are running again and it is now even more personal for me as Siân sadly lost her long battle against her cancer a few months ago. I invited my students, past and present, their parents and my colleagues to join me and we have a team of 135 runners aiming to raise £20,000 for Velindre. 13 of our runners are currently receiving/have received treatment at Velindre or have had direct family members treated there and are running the half marathon relay style, running one mile each. We also have a team of nearly 60 14-17 year olds running the Newport 10km race in August and on the same day I will be running the Full Newport Marathon all in aid of this very worthwhile cause. The Half Marathon takes place on Sunday and anything you might be willing to donate would be greatly appreciated. Please find below our justgiving page if you can help us out. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rougemontrunners or alternatively text NEWP90 followed by £1, £2, £3, £4, £5, or £10 to 70070 If you do not want to give anything, I would just like to thank you for your time in reading this message. Thanks again, Andy
