I've just started reading the compelling autobiography of Lennie. Wow, what an insight into our darkest ever period which culmanated towards our brightest ever period. My admiration for the man grows by each page that I turn over and he truly is an inspiration. I don't know if this has been discussed before, and if it has, I make no apology for bringing it to your attention again. I believe that every Charlton supporter should read this book and realise how the club was saved and then re-born thanks to Lennie and also John Fryer's Sunley group, who without thier financial injection we would surely not have a club today. Yes, it was Fryer's decision to leave the Valley for 'Craphurst Park', but as club chairman was forced into a corner and the decision eventually prompted other investors to come out of the wood work and invest in such a famous club. I wonder if Chrissie Powell was inspired by this book as there are so many on field similarities between the team Lennie assembled, under very difficult circumstances, and todays new era of playing staff. Having been born and lived all of my life in Essex and watched my first Charlton game back in 71' as a seven year old I am truly an Addicks fan and am proud of our history and all of those who have helped our rollercoaster club. I only paid £5 for this from the club shop.
i would have said legend in my eyes but soon as he went to palace lost any respect he had dont cross over to our neighbours he knows the bad feeling for palace shouldnt have taken job
Loved Lennie though the palace thing has lessened my admiration specially when asked if some charlton fans would be upset at him moving to palace he said "all that charlton thing was 20 odd years ago"...Bit of a stab in the back to me. Yes silly and immature BUT thats football fans for you. For the record I went to virtually every single match home and away under lennies management and without him we wouldnt be here today.
I bought my first season ticket when Lennie was in charge and have had one evr since. I saw all the matches at both Craphurst & Upton Parks and even met Lennie in the club shop at Cripple Palace...he signed the History of Charlton book for me as we exchanged pleasantry's .Lennie woill always have aplace in my heart for performing miracles with no cash and no ground. I'd love to see him back as director of football.
like others i got my first season ticket at selhurst when lennie was in charge and sat in artur wait enclosure i always think of lennie as mr houdinin for the leeds game ,which is the best game in living memory ive been to even beats the play off game vs sunderland which i also went to!so much was riding on that game and he kept us up theirs a piece in my book on that game!.I met lennie a couple times after he left us always comes across a nice bloke ,but as miketyson put it didnt really take to charlton fans that well and when he went to palace lost a lot of fans respect especially loyal addicks who where shocked at his decission to defect to our lovely neighbours. As i said earlier he knew of the bad feeling their is between the two sets of fans, personally if i was a charlton legend i would have not taken the job just on the ill feeling between palace and charlton,i know he needs a job but he was director at carshalton before wasnt he?.in my view you should never cross that line like campbell did to spurs.Once an addick always an addick as they say its called loyalty. What winds me up he must have known charlton still hate palace so why take the job?personally i wouldnt have done dont know about anyone else -i just hope he sends them down with bad signings
That whole post looked like it was typed in the dark. It's obviously sad to see him at Palace now,but as has been said, te man needs a job. I'm assuming just being a 'charlton legend' doesn't pay fantastically on it's own.
He was working as director of football at Hereford United before Palarse appointed him so the he needs a job thing don`t wash with me he had one. Loved Lennie was gutted when he left for Boro at the time have wished him well throughout his career BUT he did the unthinkable joined them soooo is history for me . Once upon a time steve Brown when about top depart the valley was said to be wanted by palarse he stated publically in the SLP that he`d never join them....thats a man you respect.
I agree Mt, howver, if you are out of work and want to get back quick you would take whatever came your way. I have no feelings at all for Palarse but wish Lennie well.
I wish him well ...after Palarse, and he wasnt out of work..its just the lure of selhurst was too much for him..GRRRRRRR
Lennie did a good job before departing for Boro. Unfortunately, he has now joined the spotty nigels and I am afraid he has gone down in my estimation. The only way he can redeem himself is ensuring that the spotties get relegated.
as i said you dont even take a job at palarse if your charlton legend dont cross that line charlton should be through and through dont talk to neighbours......
it called loyalty which is sadly lacking in todays game with both managers and players look how many players have joined palace or millwall in recent years
