One of the VPs at work is from Limerick and is on the committee of the Jersey GAA - it was a surprise to him when I said that I knew how the scoring worked (this was before Sky started showing it). I had to confess that I used to watch the highlights that were on Channel 4 when I was a teenager.
Oh dear - Christie crashed and got disqualified again! Maybe the Olympics just isn't for her! Looks like our last medal hopes will be in the Ice sweeping..
Have to feel sorry for the Norwegian back-up net minder. His first taste of Olympic action is in the quarter-finals, coming on for the start of the second period with a rampant Russian side already 3-0 up. As I type, Norway have scored with their 4th shot of the game in the 27th minute, but now Russia have made it 4-1. It seems that the goal from Norway has woken them up, as they were cruising the second period until then.
Another ice hockey story: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/win...g-off-silver-medal/ar-BBJtSCt?ocid=spartandhp There were 6 other teams in that competition who would have given their best sticks to have got silver, and other countries, including GB, who would have been happy to have qualified for the Olympics. None of her team-mates removed their medals - I think she was told to apologise by the IOC, IIHF, Canadian Federation or her coach.
We have to let them win once per decade to keep them coming I liked the report that the police had been called out all over Scotland to deal with a mass outbreak of singing - especially strong in the Murrayfield area - they said some walked 500 miles to deal with it.
Well it seems the decisions of the ref did divided opinion but then we got away with a contentious call the game before!
Going to the TMO for the second try, they didn't go back further in the move as there was a forward pass - I don't know how the linesman, who was that side, didn't notice. However, Scotland were the better side and deserved their win. I wonder if European Rugby can take retrospective action regarding the incident involving Owen Farrell?
I watched the other two games and from what I saw of the Calcutta Cup match, Scotland were good value for the win, regardless. Take it on the chin and we move on to the next match.
Roger Bannister died - I remember as a kid the breaking of the 4 minute mile. At the time it seemed impossible. It had been a barrier that might never be breacged. They said that with today's training and technology he would have gone a lot faster.
I remember it well. There were rather grainy black and white TV pictures. It would be impossible to break said a lot of opinion without putting the runner at medical risk. He was one of the nicest people to meet according to many, totally modest about his achievement, yet it went down as one of the highlights of the 20th C.
Yes - they did say it was impossible - a bit like the early days of the motor car where going to fast would explode your head or something like that. I might manage to run a mile in 40 minutes on a good day now
This is a bit like those "We were so poor..." jokes. "I'm so old, by the time I'd walked a mile I'd have been overtaken by my reincarnated self!"
It also has to be remembered that his achievement was the actual mile (1,609m), not the 1500m "metric mile" they run today.
