An armed officer who stood outside a Florida school where a gunman killed 17 people last week "certainly did a poor job", the US president has said.

Deputy Scot Peterson resigned after an investigation found he failed to confront the suspect.

President Trump said the officer trained his whole life but "certainly did a poor job" protecting students.

Mr Trump said Mr Peterson was a "coward" who "didn't react properly under pressure".

"He trained his whole life but when it came time to do something he didn't have the courage," Mr Trump told reporters outside the White House on Friday. "He certainly did a poor job."

My opinion is that Americans need to learn that handing someone a gun doesn't make them a hero. When the the bullets start flying not everyone is going to react in the same way and a 54 year old security guard may not decide to go and tackle someone with an assault rifles.

Just looking for a scapegoat.

If I was a yank I'd repel any gun law changes myself.

Was about to say the same thing.
Calling him a coward, when Trump was a draft dodger :)

It’s a difficult one, but Trump’s out of order calling the guy a coward. Especially for a guy who assiduously dodged doing any military service himself.

On the other hand, you could argue ‘what’s the point of having an armed guard who’s not gonna do anything when **** gets real?’

That's the problem though, giving someone a gun doesn't prepare them for coming under fire, not everyone is going to put their life on the line. I'm sure the guy will kick himself and be ashamed for the rest of his life that he didn't do more buit for that tosser to call him a coward is absurd. I doubt very much Trump would have gone in there.

yup.
And sack the guy by all means, but theres no need to go on TV and start name calling.
This is why Trump is no good, he is like a child, even when I agree with him, he takes it too far and says something stupid, and then I am like "FFS, just stop".

Absolutely no way Trump would have gone in there. And he’s a **** for publicly outing the guy, who will now no doubt now have to move to get away from numerous Trump supporting ‘heroes’ taunting him about his failure to act.

He’s a self publicist mate.

He latches on to anything that he thinks will make him look tough. Even though he’s a pussy himself.

... Donald will be particularly pissed off with this cop because he has single handedly completely undermined Donald's "arm the teachers" initiative / solution ... the only practical way that's gonna be plausible now would be to have armed combat veterans in every US school ... nice one Donald <ok>

As the thread's vaguely about guns in the US, I'll post this genuine advert from the National Rifle Association:

The guy that shot up the school was a MAGA hat wearing Trump loon. Coincidence? Probably not.

Gross hypocrisy at its finest.

American's call it "the greatest country on Earth" even though they need armed guards at ****ing schools.

Trump's criticism of the security guard isn't even the worst case of chatting **** to come out of this.
People are slagging off the survivors of the shooting for talking about gun control.
There's a witch-hunt in the conservative press over there for the most prominent kids.
