http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/alister-morgan/arsene-wenger-should-have_b_936152.html? While Mr Morgan could be praised for his attempts at helping to raise our Gross National Product at suggesting football clubs Buy British, I don't think it is fair to suggest that the main reason for the departure of some of our key players lies with their origins. His example of Messrs Rooney & company is even more flawed and proves if nothing else that money was the root of those players staying put with their respective clubs. Taking just three players from each of three leading three clubs for this discussion, Wayne Rooney earns £26000 per day which on the basis of a seven day week equates to £182000 per week or a staggering £9.4 million per annum. Source - guardian.co.uk Steven Gerrard by comparison earns a paltry £6.5 million a year, source - soccer magazine and whose daily salary is the subject of an entertaining ( if you are impressed by that sort of thing ) second by second countdown on salary-money.com John Terry signed a five-year contract in August 2009 which is reported to be £150,000 per week or £7.8 million per annum. Source - telegraph.co.uk Back in the summer of 2007, his salary was described as obscene by the then Minister of Sport. I really don't think that much beyond money was the reason all these players stayed put and I wish journalists wouldn't throw their own slant at a report just to make a story. I also wish Samir Nasri would just keep his silence as opposed to saying that it was a lack of spending that forced his move to Man City. Unless of course, he means a lack of spending on him.
He's right tho, i mean it's not like any foreign player has ever spent his whole career at one english club!
No that may be true but some of them have given clubs like us their best years. Some of them like Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Anders Limpar, Freddie Ljungberg. Eduardo too would have stayed and given us his all. Many players also are simply moved on because clubs perceive they are at the end of their contracts with age and performance also being factors in the decision-making. The three examples I gave also happened to be players much valued by their respective clubs. Sadly we don't appear to show that level of longevity towards our players.
So, Wenger should have sabotaged his squad by buying British players who aren't as good simply because they would stick around longer? The 'British players have deeper connections to their clubs' argument is silly when you consider how many English players have played for more than one club. A reason why so few of them move abroad is probably because they can't be bothered to learn the language.
Or indeed have to put up with all that ' foreign food ' and customs let alone keep the wife, WAG and kids happy. A part of me can understand the telling off SAF gave journalists not too long ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XPinFCIM3Q&feature=related Some journalists are just full of the c word
What a crock of ****. The ONLY reason Gerrard isn't at Chelsea and Rooney at Madrid/Milan etc is because they held their clubs to ransom for higher wages. And isn't Cashley Cole English if I remember correctly? Also 'Kenny Dalglish has spend around £77m on four English players".. who all left their old clubs for lots more money Who gets paid to write this xenophobic crap?
How about we only go on about white English talents. Black ones might want to go back to mother Africa one day.
to be honest i was being sarcastic, the only reason english players don't go off to foreign clubs and move about like foreign players do is because the lack of ability and stupid prices.
