You can pick tactical fault with virtually every manager in the game in most games. If a game of football was down to managers tactical decisions it may as well be a big game of football manager on the pc. You place far too much emphasis on the dug out imo. It's this attitude which has led to the fans backing virtually every managerment sacking Short has made, giving the bloke deniability for his mistakes in the process. You want to talk about judgement, everyone can finally see the deep rooted psychological problems flowing through the squad with the lack of depth and quality topped off with no budget to ever set about solving the problem has our managers hands tied. It's been this way for a while which is why I saw no point in sacking Grayson. I trust my Judgement, Coleman seems a perfectly adequate manager, I think the same of Grayson, but there's absolutely **** all either can/could do to stop our slide, so what's the point of focusing on it? Go look on twitter and facebook and the in the media. Our fan base have woken up and now facing up to our real problem. So lets back the players and Coleman unconditionally to aid them in pulling off miracle and get on bloody Short and Bain's back instead.
Who doesn't do that? Even Reid, our greatest modern day manager favoured Garath ****ty Hall at fullback. He's searching for an answer in a pot of questions. Easy to put him down for trying things when everything he's going to try is going to fail virtually every time. He can't win but at least he's trying and not giving up like Moyes.
Its not his choice of personell its his choice of formation i dont like. I really dont think hes playing our squad to its full strengh. 442 is the only way in this league imo like most other teams play. I dont want to slag him off cause i like the bloke but seems though theres a thread been put up about him i thought id say my bit.
We've been the same for years. We can't play 442 cause the defence leaks too many goals, we're lightweight and slow. We can't play 5 at the back cause we won't score if we play until next week. Same old problems which are impossible to solve without resources. He's doing what every other manager has done, cause there nowt else he can do. I don't think this squad has single strength, certainly not 442, we get murdered time after time. Same for 352. We're limited to the point we can't play any formation or style effectively imo.
I think if we have a strength in the squad it's in attack and not in defence and it's time to throw caution to the wind and get aggressive. We've got a better chance of putting a run together like that I reckon, playing conservatively is going to take us down with a whimper. We concede no matter how many defensive players we use so we may as well go for it.
I think well concede whatever formation we play mate. 352 limits our chance to score ourselves something which we are finding impossible to do this season. Weve got natrual wingers in our squad in Mcgeady, Mcmanaman and Lualua, we should use them. Id rather get beat 4-3 and have a good go than get beat 2-0 and hardly have a shot on target. We clawed 3 goals back in the second half against City once we went to 442.
Way i see it we're **** either way 95% of the time. We've had wins playing 5 and 4 at the back, but it 5% of the time so I don't think either formation is throwing answers at us.
With us relying on so many loanee's and the going with the kids its little wonder we are where we are. I honestly thought defensively would be our strength this season, how wrong was I. We can't defend crosses and dont have fullbacks capable of keeping crosses down to a bare minimum. We dont have commanding keepers who come for crosses, like Camp should have done on Tuesday although I can't bring myself to watch the highlights he appeared to get the blame. CC can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear and I struggle to see us picking up many more points. Boro will come at the weekend, keep us quiet for 20/30 minutes then over run us like most have done this season visiting the SOL. I'm sick to the bottom of my heart regarding our present situation and can only see one outcome come May but am more than happy to be proved wrong....here's hoping.
Best post I've read in a while mate. Sums up what I'm thinking in a better way than I can put it. The only bit I disagree with is why people would want to get on Bain's back. What has he done wrong?
We'll continue to leak goals as long as John Oshea and Billy Jones are in the defence and Cattermole is 'protecting' them. Jones has to be the worst full back playing professionally and Oshea is an absolute embarrassment, I'm sick of hearing this "great organiser" ****e. He's by far and away the worst centre half at the club. He cant run, can't tackle, can't pass and all he does is head the ball into the stands off his ****ing 50 pence shaped head!
He told Coleman we're not interested loaning players out which didn't have future fees written in tight. Coleman then stated this publicly, week later N'dong went on loan without an obligation to buy which made Coleman look a ****. It was at this point I realised it's Bain who is a **** for putting our own manager in a potions when he's contradicting himself and further making us look a mockery. I was pretty much on the fence with him up till that point. Oh by the way. Bain has just canceled a Q&A he and Coleman were to attend with the fans. Further reason, when the going gets tough, Bain distances the club from the fans further. It's not good mate. Bain's slip is showing recently imo. I've been one who has defended him but recently cracks are showing and it's revealing a bit of a dickhead imo.
He was right to go 4 at the back against Brentford but chose the wrong players so it didn't work and he quickly resorted back to his preferred 5-3-2 against Bolton where in fairness bar an awful goal we had the lions share of possession and chances. Hope he shows some balls and drops Oshea Cattermole and Jones for Boro.
I don't really blame Bain for cancelling the Q&A. Fans were baying for his blood at the Brentford game I don't think it'd be safe for him to be in a room full of pissed up and pissed off fans
What judgement on Cattermole? He's had 1 and a half good games this season - rest of the time he's been ****e - I like him and I rated him - but this season he's been utterly awful for the most part. Your argument is that Grayson is better than Coleman - mine is that, factually, he's not (0.66 points per game for Grayson vs 0.9 for Coleman - therefore proving that he is better. As I said above, trivial argument - if Grayson stayed and we got relegated (almost definitely would have) I wouldn't have blamed Grayson at all If Coleman relegates us (almost certainly will) it won't be his doing either.
No point in complaining about the manager appointment and January signings. I think we have did the best we could.
Some great responses to this thread, and Bri hits it on the head every time, I would go all out from now on in with a back four preferably sans JoS and Jones, but the options almost make it impossible, would prefer to see Catts in a more attacking role if we have to play him at all, with someone else with a bit of composure in the defensive role. Just my opinion, but having watched the highlights of the last game, I thought we deserved to draw the game, this has happened a few times already this season and has cost us two or three points which might be crucial at the death. Nil Desperandum.
Mmmm - we tried to play hard-ball with the N'Dong loan, but the world and his wife know our financial situation and that we would have to back down in the fullness of time. I can't blame him for trying to get a better deal there. The Q&A cancelation is poor Another one is a meeting I attended at the Club before Xmas which the Club had set up to see why there was a total disconnect between fans and players. One thing that came up is that Bain himself is ignorant with the fans - walks straight past autograph-hunting kids standing outside of the ground. By and large though he is fronting for Short, so he's on to a hiding for nothing
