****ing op's been cancelled. Some anaesthetist who's reviewed my notes thinks I have peripheral vascular disease, so says I need to come for the op in a 'hot week'. This is when more specialists are on hand, as I'm deemed a higher risk. I was under a vascular surgeon last year for my bites and he was quite happy with my ****ing circulation. They healed on their own at the end and were just above my ankle - peripheral circulation? I then go through a 3.5 hour hip replacement op and recover in text book fashion (last September) - peripheral circulation? I've had all the blood tests and ECGs under the sun - no problems. The vascular surgeon even told me I was in very good general health. What the ****? Finally, the admission secretary told me that the next available 'hot week' is in ****ing June. I've registered my views with the pre-op nurse who's going to speak to someone at lunchtime about it. Taken a days' holiday to get this sorted out. The pre-op nurse even found the letter from the vascular surgeon saying I was discharged as he was happy with how well the ulcers had healed. I'm ****ing fuming
Anaesthetists are often a bit windy mate. Are you having a general for this one? As you had a local for your hip didn’t you?
As far as I'm aware, I'm having the same spinal job. If the ****ing vascular surgeon's happy, **** the anaesthetist.
on a brighter note though... your mate thats coming over can now be met up with? look i know you are eager to get it done and over with but i thought at least one silver lining my cheer you up
If you’re not having a general for this one, then I don’t understand his logic. However, the surgeon is very unlikely to overrule him imho, as he’d be taking full responsibility if there was an issue. They generally prefer to operate when there’s a bigger team available anyway. I had a major op last year and there was 6 junior doctors / surgeons as part of the backup team in theatre ffs
umm doesn't work like that as i'm fairly certain you know and anyway the ****ing vascular surgeon hasn't said you are in perfect nick for anaesthesia right now has he.

How long is the op for both knees as a matter of interest mate? ****ing mad that they’ll have the chisels out while you’re lied there awake ffs, I couldn’t do it, I’d insist on a general.
About 3.5 hours. Same as the hip, which had to be partially reconstructed. It;s actually not an issue being awake. You don't feel anything and you're sedated as well. You can hear it though, even over the music in your earphones

No, it's pretty standard for anything below the waist. Anyway, I got it sorted. It's now on 14th March. My surgeon actually got involved, but he's back with the 'stop smoking or I won't operate' stance. That's what he said when I first went to see him. It ended up with 'try your best' and 'do what you can'. However, just in case, I'll stop the week before

My personal opinion is that it was a box ticking decision - he's turned 60 and he smokes, therefore he must have peripheral vascular issues. If that was the case the ulcers that developed after those bites last year would never have healed. One of them was about a third of an inch deep. He saw how the incision on my hip had healed post-op and I would imagine that's what he put across. That and the pulse in my feet had been checked after the hip and was fine.
