In the hypothetical situation I’d take the cup. We will go up and go down in my lifetime so I’m sure we’d see the Premier League again at some point. Been to the JPT and League Cup final and the experience is just phenomenal and I want more of that. Although they are down in League one, I’m sure Wigan fans have that Watson goal on repeat.
It won’t do that for us, but my goodness I’m ready for a winning day at Wembley and an assault on Europa the following season, followed by winning that and playing in the Champions League from the Championship.
This is exact my reasoning... it tends to come and go for clubs like us anyway. It actually saddens me that people would take participating in a competition that we'll never win over actually winning a competition.
This is what I don't get when people say look at Wigan, Brum, Pompey now etc. I bet none of them would swap their cup for a place in the PL. And I dare I say about Pompey there's a chance we could be in the same division as them next year anyway so those people couldn't use that anymore could they?
Does it matter all that much though? I'd rather have a decade where we win one trophy and spend 3 seasons in the PL then win nothing and spend 10 years in the PL. I really don't get all this 'the PL is everything' attitude.
What is the purpose of our club, to merely exist to be cannon fodder for the mega rich, or to actually taste some glory of our own?. Realistically, we are not going to be an ever present in the CL or even the EL, so our best (and possibly only) shot at winning something are the domestic cups competitions, although I do hope to see us win the EL one day...
Exactly, and when looking back at recent success in the league with as little bias or ill views of former players, whilst finishing 6th and 7th were superb campaigns, I don’t think any of the matches or goals (aside from maybe Mane vs Liverpool in the 3-2) have sent me as barmy as I went when Long scored in the semis. And that’s wasn’t even a cup final! My housemates at uni told me to calm down because I was running round the kitchen like a lunatic!
When my nippers older I don't want to tell him the story of us finishing 6th. I want to tell him the story of us winning a pot at Wembley.
My nipper is older and he just shrugs his shoulders when I tell him, “We came 2nd in the league once.”
Same. Memories to tell the kids about. Unless you’re an Everton fan and tell the great story of the first turnstile or dugouts.....
Exactly... widening the debate a bit but it's also why i'd take a league/fa cup over any position in the league bar first.
I don't want to tell them about the story of us winning the cup, followed by the team going into a prolonged and painful tailspin from which it doesn't recover from many years. That's my fear. I don't trust our management in good times, and certainly not in bad. Now, the reverse is also true...it's entirely possible that we stay up this year while failing to win the cup (indeed, as we're massive underdogs to win the cup, this is the most likely scenario), faff about in the summer, then get relegated next season and begin a serious decline. Hypotheticals are hypotheticals, though.
Aside from being bought by someone on the same scale as City or PSG. We’d be amazing but it would be bought and not earned. I despise City more than Liverpool. They have simply bought their way to sucess. Yes they play great, but when you can bend the rules to keep all the other teams in check to get the best players then you are going to.
