Coming over next week for a bit of a booze up, starting in Beverley, & thought I'd take the train. It means I won't have to risk driving home pissed (according to the law) on Sunday morning. I don't keep tabs on fuel prices & **** like that but I'd guess it costs me upwards of £50 for a return trip. On the National Rail App Sandbach - Beverley Return - £69.60. Bit pricey were my thoughts, so I broke down the journey, for fun ... & enlightenment. Sandbach - Manchester - £17.80 Return or £26.40 (£13.20) for 2x Singles Manchester - Hull - £45.80 Return or £37 (18.50) for 2x singles Hull - Beverley - £9 Return or £14 (£7) for 2xSingles Total mixing single tickets & returns, as there's no consistency = £63.80. £5.80 cheaper for breaking up the journey. I'm not finished, it escalates. After checking the changes for the original return journey in transpires that I need to change at Stockport to head to Sheffield where I change again to pick up another train to Beverley. Sandbach to Stockport (same train as the £17.80 return,Sand-Manc but get off earlier) £77 (yes, you read that right. 77 ****ing pound notes!!) return or £21.20 (£10.60) for 2x singles. Stockport - Sheffield - £20.90 return or £10.80 (£5.40) for 2x singles Sheffield to Beverley - £32.50 return or £23 (11.50) for 2x singles. Total paying for return tickets £130.40 or Total paying for individual single tickets £43.50. What a complete & utter ****ed up piece of **** system it is. Anyway, if you're on the A63, M62, M60, M6 on Sunday, around dinner time, give me a wide berth. ****s. EDIT: Upon reflection, I may take the train option along with the opportunity to have a dirty protest on each train on the return leg.
I had a look as soon as we drew Chelsea in the cup. Thought I might take the mrs and stay over and let her do a bit of shpppoing the next day. Lots of ****ing around trying to get it quoted, in the end £269 return each. **** that.
I flew back from the Czech Republic last month. Went out in December from Leeds-Bradford. Neither Leeds-Bradford or East Midlands did direct flights in January so I was left with the choice of Manchester, Heathrow or London City. The London flights were slightly more but the cost of a Hull train from Kings Cross was £12.50pp compared with about £40pp from Manchester, both taking just over 2hrs.
The last train of the day from Kings Cross at 8:30pm (gets into Hull about 11pm) is usually very reasonable. The cheap tickets go on sale 12 weeks in advance. Edit to add: I hadn't heard about all the Hull trains cancellations until after that. I'd have been well pissed off if the train had been cancelled. Was bad enough getting to Kings Cross in rush hour with a 1 year old and suitcases because some stupid bint decided to close down half the tube, meaning we had to travel through Canary Wharf AND Bank. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www....or-london-underground-lines-a3743996.html?amp
That's the wonder of privatisation for you. Can see this thread going political inside the next half dozen posts...
Get the missus to drive you. You'll be able to drink, she can drive, and you won't have to give her a kiss when you leave. Win-win.
But it’s an earlyish start & I’ve only booked a twin room. I could ask her to drop me off Saturday & come back for me on Sunday? Wish I’d got her summat for Valentines now.
Just been in the canaries and got cheap flights with easy jet from Gatwick.. Train fares were £13.50 each way hull to kings cross booked 12 weeks in advance. About 4 and a half hours from Hull to Gatwick changing at St pancras (Brighton train stops at Gatwick). Cheaper than manchester on train
Buy yourself an extra large one of these...it'll cost around 10 quid. A couple of breathing holes and you're all set. Edit: Durable & re-useable too. please log in to view this image
I can beat that. Walked to Iceland once. Got the bus back though, cos those carrier bags really cut into your hands when they're full of frozen food.
We have friends in Essex and the train down to London wasn't too bad but from London to Shenfield was nearly 1.5 times more so the total was horrendous. Problem solved with National Express £63 return, for the 2 of us, from Boothferry Rd to Brentwood, our friends picked us up from there. Change of coach at Victoria Coach Station, that place is a great people watching terminal, especially when a pop festival has been on and they all come through with their rucksacks and wellies, its like one long procession of Wurzels.
