It always amazes me why the American public want to have guns.if they feel the need to shoot at things why don't they have regulated gun clubs ie firing ranges and when they have finished playing john Wayne go home minus the gun.The first thing that should be done is to ban semi automatic and automatic weapons full stop.why do people need guns that fire 100 bullets a second or whatever it is.surely it is only the armed forces that should have weapons like that.<doh>.
Glad I don't live in America having to bring my kids up in a society like that .school should be a safe place to leave your kids to get an education not having some idiot going round shooting young kids ffs.And trump says it is unsafe in London what a twat.

Is always the same answer from the republicans and their NRA paymasters.

A spate of high profile shootings! Answer: we need more guns. Shootings not only continue, and get more regular - 18 school shootings this year already.

    Answer: yet more guns...

Can we spot where they’re going wrong with this?...

Along with countless people saying "B-b-b-b-but the Second Amendment!"

Have they actually read the Second Amendment? Because it's quite clear that it doesn't say anyone can have a gun, only members of a well-regulated militia. The US has one of those, it's called the army.

There is certainly a case for banning automatic and semi automatic weapons. When the second amendment was written you had to reload your musket after every shot. That law is about as outdated as burning Heretics at the stake. If people want to hunt, they should pick up their gun from a gun club and go hunting in a group. There should be a minimum age of say 25 to own a gun, those junior to this perhaps could hire a gun under supervision within the group. One's medical records should also be made available and perhaps a panel of Doctors/Lawyers/Former Teachers should be consulted before a licence is granted. Any felony should result in a suspension of a fire-arm licence for at least 10 years. As with illegal drugs, a total ban will just drive everything underground, supervised limited responsible ownership is the way to go.

You have to be older to drink than to own a gun in the States.

Actually, the number of guns is not the issue.
Tis who specifically GETS those guns.

A quick bit of Wiki stattery shows cursory figures
that the USA has gun ownership 3x that of Canada,
    and a fatality rate (per 100,000) 5x.

So the USA has an effective fatality ratio of 5/3
over Canada. Not as apocalyptic as you might think.

But if you did the distribution of fatality count vs
gun user, then the number of users with a fatality
count > 1 is going to be criminals or nutters.
And I suspect counts > 9 are going to be the sole
    preserve of nutters.

So who in the USA is able to, the moment someone
is tagged as potential nutter, check what kind of
gun arsenal is possessed by that person ??

Surely the time has now come where American schools should have these scanning and or xray machines at the entrance anyone caring a weapon would be stopped in their tracks there and then.seems a no brainer to me might be expensive but surely these kids lives are worth saving in the future.

I doubt there are state-level registers of gun ownership
(owner welfare state id, number + types of firearm owned
etc) , let alone national ones.

At the end of the day any measures that make their schools safe have got to be better than waiting for trump to sort anything out.

The average nutter isn't noted for their patience, so they'd likely move on to somewhere else to shoot a bunch of people in close proximity. Good news for the school, bad news for the nearest shopping mall/fast food restaurant/post office.

It’s a fact that there are more guns than people in the US, so you’re never gonna cut it out altogether. What you can do is to introduce some sensible and some far stricter controls.

Weapons such as an Uzi, Mach 10, AK47 are military assault weapons with only one purpose - to kill people. The shooter from Wednesday used an AR 15 semi automatic assault weapon ( the NRA proudly proclaims this the most popular ‘ rifle’ in America) It also appears to be the favourite of your average teenage school shooting headcase! Strange that!

So, why are these freely available in most states? In fact in Florida it’s supposedly easier to buy an AR 15 than a conventional handgun. The answer is because the NRA views restrictions on any kind of weapon as the thin end of the wedge and automatically opposes any attempt to restrict access with its powerful Washington lobby.

    And so it goes on!....

As expected, the Republican pro-gun mob soon resorted to using the Parkland shooting as an excuse to have a go at the left.

This didn't go down well with people who were, you know, cowering for their lives when the shooting happened...
