I think that is why I've always tried to stay lost in the centre of politics somewhere, just can't be asked with all the far left and far right ****e. Maybe both sides need to travel out to Russia and know what communism really means, one person protest and all that stuff and still get arrested for it.

Royal Marines cuts would 'undermine' security, MPs warn
Some 2,000 Royal Marines could be cut, along with two of their specialist ships, under proposals that have sparked concern by MPs.

Cuts to the Royal Marines would significantly undermine national security, MPs have warned.

There is speculation the Government could axe two specialist ships - prompted by "short-term Treasury bookkeeping" - which would leave the Royal Marines struggling to carry out a "substantial" amphibious landing, according to a Commons Defence Committee report.

Some 2,000 Marines - about 30% - would be cut if the plans are signed off, the MPs say.

HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark are "essential for landing personnel, heavy equipment and supplies on a beach" and "their disposal would remove any prospect of the Armed Forces achieving a successful amphibious landing with a substantial force", says the report.

They can deploy smaller landing craft loaded with equipment and Royal Marines for a coastal assault.

Other ships touted as possible replacements, such as aircraft carriers, are no substitute, it is claimed.

The committee adds: "Every other major defence power is seeking to increase its amphibious capabilities at the very time that the UK may be forced prematurely to abandon them."

The Royal Marines have already seen their numbers drop from 7,020 to 6,580 since 2011.

"Given the disproportionate contribution the Royal Marines make to defence and the sheer range and versatility of their military skills, both they and the country's security would be significantly undermined," the report says.

The leaked proposals are from the National Security Capability Review (NSCR), which the Defence Committee claims has been carried out behind closed doors without adequate input from experts.

It wants to question the National Security Adviser about the proposals - which it calls "drastic and dangerous".

Committee chairman Julian Lewis wants the Government to boost defence spending back to 3% of GDP.

He said he was assured by the defence procurement minister last January that the Albion and the Bulwark would be in service until 2033 and 2034.

The rethink shows "this is being forced on the Ministry of Defence by the Treasury", Mr Lewis said.

But some experts believe the Committee may be wrong to insist on keeping the ships.

    More from Royal Navy
Former Royal Navy officer Rear Admiral Chris Parry told Sky News: "They are right that we should preserve as many Royal Marines as we can - they are our primary elite forces and I think we are going to need them in the future.

"I don't think they are right about retaining the amphibious ships at all costs because the future operating environment will change."

I think we can safely disband the Royal Marines and, indeed, the vast majority of the armed forces ... should we ever be threatened by an aggressor in the future the, post Brexit, Pete 'Hotpie' Saxpest will meet them on the beaches (or the café on the pier) and Kustard will be right behind him, holding Pete's coat ..<ok>

    its probably better on here

A fraudster who pretended that his family died in the Grenfell Tower fire to get money from a victims fund has been jailed.

Appearing at Southwark Crown Court, Anh Nhu Nguyen was sentenced to 21 months in prison for defrauding more than £10,000 from charities and the local council.

Nguyen claimed his wife and son died in the tragedy and was pictured shaking hands with the Prince of Wales when he met survivors.

The man even spoke to Sky News at the time of the disaster and described the "shock" of "seeing dead bodies".

"The last time I saw my son and wife was on the 12th floor," he said during an interview. "It (the smoke) was like snow, like fog, you can't see. It was too dark to see. You can't see anything. I couldn't breathe. I was like that - like I got a heart attack for 20 minutes."

At his sentencing, the 53-year-old, of Beckenham, southeast London, showed no emotion as he learned his fate.

... not for me ... people lost their lives - very likely due to some 'negligence' ... this absolute cnut's actions will, at the very least, cause administrative delays to continuing / new pay-outs to families impacted by the tragedy whilst extra 'checks' are done ... if undetected it might have also 'diluted the pot' that is ultimately distributable ... to attempt to profit from such a social tragedy is about as low as humanity can sink ..

Its low, and illegal, and he has been arrested as such, but too many opinions on this have been overly emotional.
I would argue rapists and ****s are much lower than an opportunistic bell end who tried to profit from the governments incompetence.

...and you would be right ... but that doesn't render this a 'victimless' crime ... IMHO

I don't think him serving less than a year is enough personally.

True to an extent. However, it takes a particularly low life, scumbaggy type of mentality to try and gain financial advantage from a tragedy like that.

... now you are being silly ... he should be fined an amount equivalent to his fraud and this should be added to the monies available to families of those that died ... he should also be forced to spend a day with one of the families worse affected and hopefully the cnut will reflect on just how low his actions were and turn his lowlife scum ways around ... it would be wrong to insist that he changes his allegiance from Chelsea mind ... <ok>

He’ll serve less than a year.

His first thought when he knew lots of people had died and many more had suffered was “I can profit from this.”

He’s a nasty piece of work.
