A realty pathetic display on Friday evening OS.
For everything that was good about our cup performances, that was the total reverse.
Teams with any aspirations of promotion need to go to places like Bolton and Burton and grind out narrow wins. We carried no real threat up front and that's a major concern as to where the goals are going to come from now.
We got what we deserved - nothing.
Need to pick ourselves up and damn quick before the season starts to come apart at the seams.

Watched the game on the box and thought much the same - more or less the same players on the pitch for you but a toally different game from them.

We lost 2-0 up there against them and it was much the same story. They had both Henry and Pratley in the middle for them that day and they outfought us.

As I said after our defeat by Man City in the Cup and before our Leeds game on the weekend - it's the next game that matters not the last. <ok>

I don't think it's that bad RR. Everyone has a bad run and that included us big time - beaten 4 in a row over Christmas but it is reversible.

For what it's worth I don't think Preston will trouble us - I'm more concerned with Boro and Sheff Utd. Although both have lost a couple recently, they are better sides than Preston and both are well capable of displacing a current top 6 club.

For me, despite their recent fine form Villa still look vulnerable and are due a wobble. Derby are a good side but can also be dire on times. It's all about keeping our heads and taking advantage of other's slip ups. <ok>

RR flip-flops like no-one I've ever known - apparently, 'we've blown it', because there's no way back with 16 games left to go. <doh>*

No denying the Bolton game was a poor performance, though even then it took a bit of a wonder goal on the counter for us to lose and that's ignoring the penalty we should have had in the opening minutes. We've had some luck here and there this season, so no need to grumble too much.

I've said a few times, I worry about us dominating possession, but not actually carving out decent chances. Passing it around waiting for a chance to present itself isn't necessarily a good idea - provided the opposition is well organised, they'll keep your chances to a minimum and even then, you need to take them too. One good counter attack is often more likely to result in a goal than half a dozen half-chances.

In some ways it's flattering that sides set up that way against us, but it's far from them admitting inferiority. We need to devise ways to create better opportunities, even if it means ceding possession more often. We're still in a great position with lots of time to go, but we can't afford to lose much ground - Sunderland should be there for the taking next week.

*Cue some obvious retort like 'we will blow it if we don't improve soon!'

I wouldn’t worry about what RR is saying at the moment. He was on Facebook saying the same thing and got roasted by kids on there telling him to cheer up <laugh>

I can take losing as all teams lose but I want to see fight and fridays result was no fight. Looking at LJ and what he said suggest to me that some players are going to get it in training this week.

Hopefully play Sunderland get a result and then it’s Weeds who we never get anything from at Elland Road. They will have a new manager and will no doubt be fighting for their careers.

This transfer ending and no loans means you’re pretty much stuck with the team where as before they knew if they don’t preform you could still get someone on loan who would take their place.

Interesting analysis of your team Nick and some good comments generally, but what's your take on the likely outcome come May?

Those behind us have got to win games and hope us lose ours to make any inroads. Apart from Wolves I can still see the rest of the present top 6 shuffling around a bit over the next few weeks. As said many times, all matches are worth 3 points but there are some really big games still to come amongst us.

We've got both games against Fulham out of the way (thank God) but have still got both Derby and Villa away, and Wolves and you at home to come. They could be key for us and you could say that's 12 points to play for but in reality it could seem like 24.

Haven't looked at the fixtures of the others involved, but I suppose we just have to hope they take points off each other.

I haven't analysed the fixtures much either, but I don't see either us or you completely imploding between now and May - in this Division especially, everyone's capable of taking points off anyone on their day, so even losing a few games in a row isn't enough for sides to be written off.

Of the sides currently outside the top 6, I'm not sure I see an outstanding candidate to mount a good enough run to gate-crash the playoff spots. Preston and Sheffield Utd have both been excellent against expectations, but I'm not convinced they'll have the depth/consistency to outperform their rivals. Leeds are still a bit too much of a basket-case club, Middlesbrough have been a bit underwhelming and Norwich are probably too defensively minded and relying on the magic of James Maddison to string enough wins together.

If I were a betting man I'd say either Villa or Derby for 2nd (likelihood in that order), with both of us in the playoffs along with Fulham. Then it comes down to who's in form at the time.

What the one who’s not played in a while? He’s come on in the last two games one to play up front on his own which he’s more of a number 10 and twenty minutes against Bolton.
Have you written him off already?

No I just think if we have a Ten million striker then we should play him, class is permanent. We are crying out for a out and out striker, play him alongside Fammy, with Reid just behind in the triangle formation. We need to start hitting the onion bag.

I'm sure he will start soon enough - starting his first couple of games on the bench for a new team in a new country isn't controversial.

@NickH @Red Robin Interesting point about Diony Nick and RR.

Forgetting the loan/transfer money involved for a minute, given the choice, would you prefer an unknown quantity on loan from St Etienne or Gary Madine to start up front?

I know you can't judge Diony at the moment, but is taking a chance on him a better option than going for a proven goalscorer at this level?

Diony looks exceptional. He's barely had the right service yet but in the brief glimpses I've seen he could be different class.
