This is getting confusing. I thought that if a player passes the ball towards a team mate and he is in an offside position, then it is given as an offside. Doesn't matter if there is a touch by an opponent before the ball reaches its target. However, if the ball is kicked or passed and the ball is deflected by an opponent to another player in an offside position then it shouldn't be deemed offside.

The ref got it wrong.

The rule is it has to be an attempt to play the ball. Deflections don’t count, but Lovren took a swing so even if he ****ed up the kick it was a deliberate attempt to play the ball.

But 2 issues are, ref guesses then asked a VAR which shouldn’t be happening, and kane was interfering in my opinion so should be offside before before Lovren attempts to kick it.

Thats thenodd bit, the ref says e has no idea if Lovren kicked it, so going on that he has to give what he sees and if he has no idea then he didn’t see Lovren kick it. So can only go with Lino for offside.

Tp then ask for video ref is odd. If var is live they go to him and he says yes he kicked then fine, but that’s why we’re gettig var? I don’t see the difference now if ref is asking 4tg offfial to look at replay on tv and advise, to what var is? Surely they’re the same thinrbg n

 

according to all officials at time of discussion....without the aid of sanctioned VAR then no. (and that's not even taking interpretation into account). you simply can't give a penalty if the linesman says it's offside unless you can tell me the defender touched it. simple as that.

if they had VAR. .. then the vid ref and ref can decide the whole interfering with play

they don't have it so go by the current rules......

 

Karius English is quite good

 

My vision is quite good as well, plus I've seen the replays. The ones where Kane dangles his leg as he dives hoping to make contact.

I can and have accepted a ref not giving something if they didn't see it...i might criticise them for not getting their arse in position to do so, I even criticise linesmen for not making the call.

I might disagree with this linesmans second call but at least he did his job and made it.

But a ref that has info that there was an offside but can't say if defender touched the ball who says "I'll give it anyway" that's a disgrace.
